Imam J'afar Al Sadeq [AAH]

Imam Jcafar Al Sadeq: is the descendant of Mawlana Imam Al-Husein and a very great one of the scholars of Ahl-Al-Bait.

Sheikh Sh

ams-addin Mohammad ibn Makki Said: I transferred from sheikh Ahmed Farahany transcripts about cEnwan Al-Basry who was an old man had come to be ninety-four years. In these transcripts, Al-Basry said:

I attended the sessions of Malik ibn Anas [the famous imam of Sharia -AAH] for years to learn from him. But, when Jcafar Al Sadeq [AAH] came to Al-Medina [the city of Mohammad -PPBUH] I kept on visiting him and I wanted to Learn from his knowledge , as I learned from Malek. One day he told me that he was a continuously needed man, yet he had Awrad [prayers] for every hour; day and night, and he asked me not to keep him from his Awrad, instead he advised me to go back to learning from Malek.

I was very sad for this, I went out from his presence and said to myself: If he had found something good in me, he would not have denied me his visits and his tutoring. I entered Al-Masjid [Mosque] of the messenger of Allah; sayyiduna Mohammad [PPBUH], I greeted him [in his Maqam]. I came back the next day to the Masjid, and I prayed in the Rawda [the place between the Maqam and the Pulpit of the messenger of Allah -PPBUH] two Rakacat [the plural of Rakcah, which is the unit of Salat. e.g. salat al-asr is four rakacat], and I supplicated to Allah: ''I ask you Allah to make the heart of Jacfar soft for me, and to give me from his knowledge what guides me to your straight way". Then I went back to my home very sad, and I never went back to Malek because my heart was filled with the love of Jacfar. I never went out of my home except for Salat [the required prayers] until I was out of patience. Then I put on my shoes and went to Jacfar, that was after salat al-asr.

When I was at his door step, I asked permission to see him. A servant of him came out and asked me about what I needed, and I told him that I want to extend my salam [greetings] to the honorable imam. The servent said that he was in salat in his Musalla [place of his salat at home]. So, I sat by the door waiting. It was only a short while when the servant came back to me and invited me in. I went in and I said the salam [greeted] Jacfar and answered my salam back and said 'please sit down may Allah forgive you'. So, I sat and he was silently looking down for a long period. Then he raised his head and said: 'What is your nick name?'. I said: 'Abu Abdallah'. He said: 'May Allah keep your nick name to you and grant you success', [keeping the nick name is an honor that Allah only give to his accepted righteous people] and he asked me: 'O Abu Abdallah, what is it that you want?'. I said to myself: 'If I do not have anything from his visit and salam, other than this prayer of his, then that would be much more than enough'. Then he asked me again: 'what is your need?' I said: 'I asked Allah to make your heart soft for me and to give me from your knowledge, and I believe that Allah has given me what I asked of you'. He said:

O Abu Abdallah, knowledge is not by learning, but it is a light that Allah puts in the hearts of those He want to guide. So, if you want to learn, seek first in your soul the essence of slavery to Allah and use it to seek the knowledge. And ask Allah the understanding and He would give it to you. I said: 'O honorable man', but, he stopped me and said: 'Say O Abu Abdallah'. I said: 'O Abu Abdallah, what is the essence of slavery to Allah?' He said: Three things:

- A slave should not see himself as owner to what Allah gave him, because slaves do not have ownership. They see that the money is Allah's and they put it where He ordered them to.

- A slave does not arrange for himself any arrangement.

- All he is preoccupied with, is what Allah order him to do or prevented him from.

So, If the slave does not see ownership in what he has, then it would be very easy for him to spend it whatever Allah ordered him to. And, if the slave left arrangement to his Master, then it would be very easy for him to accept his fate of Dunya [this earthly life], and if he is only occupied with doing what Allah ordered to, and straining from what Allah prevented him from, then he will not have time for hypocrisy and ostentation with people.

'If Allah gave the slave these three, then Dunya, Satan and all creatures will be nothing to him and he will not seek proliferation and boasting in this Dunya. He will be too honorable and high to ask for what is in people's hands. He will not let his days go in vain, and that is the first stage of Al Toqa [Allah-fearingness]. Allah said: [That home of the Hereafter (i.e. Paradise), We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqûn ] (Al Kasas 28:83).

I said: 'O Abu Abdallah, what do you recommend for me?'

He said: 'I recommend you nine things which are my recommendation for the seeker [Murid] for Allah's path, and I ask Allah to help you use them: '

Three of them are for self-discipline, three are for toleration, and three are for knowledge [Allah science]. So, memorize them and never neglect them. So, cEnwan -continuing his story- said : 'I gathered myself and opened my heart to prepare for his recommendations.'

So, Jacfar said:

- The three that are for self-discipline are:

. Do not eat what you do not desire, for it makes you foll and stubid.

. Do not eat unless you are hungry.

. If you eat only eat Halal and say [Besm Allah] and remember the hadith of the Messenger [PPBUH] that said: (Nothing a human can fill worse than his stomach, but you have to, then one third for food, one third for drink, and one third for respiration).

- The three that are for the toleration are:

. Whoever tells you: 'if tell me onething you listen to ten from me', you tell him: 'if you tell me ten things you will not hear anyone from me.'

. Whoever swears at you, you tell him: 'if you are honest in what you are saying, then I ask Allah to forgive me. If you are lying in what you are saying, then I ask Allah to forgive you.'

. Whoever gave you obscenity, then give him advice and care.

- The three that are for the knowledge are:

. Ask the scholar sheikhs about what you do not know, but never ask them to try them.

. Never do anything on your own opinion, and take precaution whenever you can. i.e. by having a reference from Qur'an or Sunna.

. Run from giving a religious judgment, as if you are running from a lion. Do not make your own neck as abridge for others.

'Now leave me, O Abu Abdallah, for I have advised you. Do not spoil my awrad for me, for I am a man who keeps himself to Allah. Peace be upon he who follow the Guidance'.
