The Hoopoe

The Hoopoe is a known bird having striped feathers and many colors. It has many nicknames due to his role in the religious history, e.g.: the news bird, the spring bird, the worshiper bird, the bird with soul, ...

This bird has foul odor, because he build his nest in the garbage area which is common for all his kind. Yet, one of his gifts is that he can see the underground water as a human can see the water in a bottle.

They said that he was the water seeker of the prophet Soliman (PBUH) and that is why he missed him and sought him. When Soliman was done building Jerusalem, he intended to go to the Haram (sacred place) of Meccah, so, he prepared for the trip and he accompanied jinn, humans, devils, birds and wild animals. His army was so big that its length was almost 300 miles. The wind carried them all to the Haram of Meccah where he stayed as long as Allah wanted him to stay. They were eating 5000 camels, 5000 bulls and 20,000 sheep everyday as long as they stayed in Meccah. He told the honorable people from Hoopoehis company that from this sacred place, Meccah, an Arabian Prophet will appear, and he described that prophet to them. He said that this prophet will be victorious over any enemy, and his prestige will precede him by a month's walk. The far and near are the same for this prophet in justice. He will not respond to any kind of blaming when honoring Allah's words. Soliman’s people asked him about this prophet's religion, and he said: 'the Hanifiyyah (Islam), and blessed is he who sees and believes in him'. They said: how long will it be between our time and the day of his appearance? Soliman said: 'About a thousand years. Whoever is present now should tell who are absent that this prophet is the master prophet and the last of all messengers'.

Soliman lived in Maccah till he ended his rituals, then one day he left Maccah in the morning, and took the way of Yemen and he reached Sanncaa' (a city in Yamen) at sunset and that was like a month's walk. He saw a nice green land and he wanted to stay there to pray and eat. The Hoopoe thought that Soliman would be busy for a while, so, he flew up so high and looked in all directions. The Hoopoe sighted a garden that belonged to Belqais (the queen of Yamen at the time), so, he went down to its plants. There he met another hoopoe from Yemen. The name of the hoopoe of Soliman was Yafour.

The other hoopoe said to Yafour: 'where did you come from and where do you want to go?'. Yafour replied: 'I came from Al-Sham with my master Soliman the son of Dawood'. The other hoopoe said: 'who is Soliman?' Yafour said: 'He is the king of jinn, humans, devils, birds, wild animals and the wind', and he described to him how vast and great Soliman's kingdom was and how Allah subjugated everything to him. Then Yafour asked the other hoopoe and found out that he was from the same country, Yemen. The other hoopoe described to Yafour how Belqais' Kingdom was and that there was 12,000 commanders under her authority and each of them commands a hundred thousand warrior. He asked Yafour if he could go with him to see Belqais' Kingdom. Yafour was afraid that Soliman might miss him during prayer time, if he needed water. The other hoopoe convinced him that King Soliman will be pleased when he tells him about Queen Bilqais. Yafour went to see Belqais' Kingdom and he could not return back to Soliman until it was afternoon.

The place where Soliman stayed did not have any water, and no one could locate the source of water, that is when Soliman missed Yafour and found out about his absence. He summoned the corporal of the birds who was the Eagle and asked him about the hoopoe but he, also, didn’t know. Soliman was very angry and said: I will give him severe punishment﴿ (An-Naml 27:21). He ordered the Eagle, the master of the birds, to find and bring the hoopoe immediately.

The Eagle flew so high and looked all over the earth as if it was a bowl in a man’s hand; he looked right and left and there was the hoopoe; Yafour coming back from Yemen. The Eagle attacked him but Yafour begged him in name of Allah; who gave him the strength and the authority, to be merciful and not to hurt him before taking him to Soliman first. The Eagle let him and told him that the prophet of Allah, Soliman, vowed to punish you with a severe torment or Eagleslaughter you. Yafour said: Did he make any exceptions? The Eagle replied: Yes, he said unless he brings me a clear reason﴿ (An-Naml 27:21). The hoopoe; Yafour said then I am saved. They flew back to Soliman.

When they reached Soliman, the hoopoe lowered his tail and wings and walked to him so modestly. Soliman griped him by the head. The hoopoe yielded and said: Oh prophet of Allah, remember when you stand in front of Allah. Soliman remembered the prestige and majesty of Allah, and trembled from the fear of Allah, and so he forgave the Hoopoe even before he knew the reason for his absence. Then he asked him about his absence, and the hoopoe told him about Bilqais' kingdom.

Comments from the books:

Elzamakhshary wrote in his book that, when Soliman said: he will punish the hoopoe; he meant the punishment suitable for his kind to make him as example to them.

It was also said that: Soliman was punishing the birds by taking off their feathers and leaving him in the sun with no protection; that was the most common saying. It was also said: they were painted with tar and left in the sun, or they were casted for the ants to eat them. Some said they were caged or separated from their mates. Others said: they were forced to accompany their anti which was the worse kind of the prisons.

If you wonder why Allah gave him the permission to punish the birds? We say that Allah gave him the authority to do that the same way as He gave us the right to slaughter the animals and birds for eating and other benefits.

A joke

One day, Yafour, the hoopoe, told Soliman that he want to invite him to a meal. Soliman said: Only me? Yafour told him that his army can come too. Yafour specified the place; on an island and he specified the time on a certain day.

on the specified date, Soliman came with his army. Yafour flew, caught a locust, killed it and threw it in the sea. Then he said to them: Eat everyone, who does not get the meat, he can have the soap. Soliman and his army laughed at this joke for a year.

Blessings

What does Islam say about getting blessings from our Prophet and his family, the other prophets, the companions and the righteous people?

If we look at the Book of Allah [Qur'an] and the Sunnah of His Messenger Syadna Mohammad [PPBUH], we will find an answer for this...

Blessing from the Pulpit [Manbar] of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH]

Qadi Ayyad said: Ibn Omar was seen placing his hand over the seat of the prophet from the pulpit, and then putting it on his face.

It was written in the book of: "Concepts that must be corrected"; and narrated by Ibrahim ibn Abdullah ibn Abdul-Karea and Aby Kaseet & Alattaby, that the companions of the Prophet Mohammad, when the mosque was to become empty, were sensing the post of the pulpit, which is opposite to His grave [Maqam] and then they face the Qibla to pray and ask Allah. from "the Healing" Al-Shifa' by Qadi Ayad.

It was narrated by Ibn Taymiyya from Imam Ahmad, that he permitted the touching of the pulpit [Manbar] and its post. It was said that Ibn Omar, Saied Ibn Al-Musayyib, and Yahya Ibn Saied from the scholars of Al Madinah were doing this. "Requiring the Right Path".

Blessing from his Divine Tomb [Maqam]

Published in the book Al-Wafaa by Al-Hafez AL-Ghozi: that Sayydatuna Fatima Al-Zahra, [AAH], came to the Tomb [Maqam] of the Prophet and took a handful of its dust and put it to her eyes and cried and said, singing:

Whoever smells Ahmed's Soil,

should not smell calamities for all times

I have had calamities, big enough

to turn all days into nights

Then She kissed the dust and placed it back. Thus if this was not right Sayydatuna Fatima al-Zahra' would not have done it.

When death approached Syadna cUmar ibn al-Khattab [AAH], he said to his son Abdullah: "Go to the mother of believers Aisha and say to her: cUmar is sending you his peace greetings [As-Salam], and don't say the prince of believers, because today I am not, and say: cUmar ibn al-Khattab is asking the permission to be buried with his two companions". So his son went to her, greeted her, then entered her room. He found her crying, so he said: "cUmar sending you his peace greetings [As-Salam], and asking your permission to be buried with his two companions. She said: I wanted this for myself, but, today I will favor him to myself. So, when they saw him coming, they said to sayyduna cUmar: This is Abdallah ibn cUmar coming. He said hold me up. A man supported him up and he said to his son: What do you have? His son said: "I have what you loved, O prince of believers, you got the permission". Sayyduna cUmar said: "Thanks to Allah! nothing was more important to me than this. When I am dead, carry me, go there, greet her and said cUmar is asking your permission. If I get her permission then enter me, and if I do not, then carry me to the Muslim's cemetery. Narrated by Bukhari in the Book of Funerals, section (the Tomb of the Prophet) and the book of the virtues of the Companions [Sahaba], section (the story of the pledge of allegiance).

What was the secret of the insistence of Sayyduna cUmar ibn al-Khattab to be buried in the prophet's divine grave, if it were not for His blessings?
