Thank you Nahed, we did add your expressions to the new Glossary.

Regards,

The group (posted 23 Feb 2010)

Dear Group,
I suggest to make a side in the Translators Page named "Translated Subject" or "Translated Issues" that may contains the subjects that have been already translated and to make another side named "On hold translations" that may contain the subjects that are being translated by one of us and it is not done completely.
This is as not to make any one of the members ask every time for the translated subjects, so, it can be updated time by time to prevent duplications in shared comments by translators.
I hope you find a good thing about this idea.

Thank you & Regards

Ahmed (posted 23 Feb 2010)

Alsalamu Alikum,
This is important, guys. I guess there is a technical problem in the design of the website. It does not work properly with me. It is not the first time I face such problems. I am pretty sure I have an excellent internet connection here in U.S. Could you please check this problem for me? This makes me behind in the translation.
Best,
Nahed (posted 3 Mar 2010)

Dear Nahed

Could you please describe the nature of the error. e.g. when you open the site, what happens?

Please describe as extensive as you can in order for us to be able to fix the problem. because we do not see this problem.

We also need to know if you are using Internet Explorer or any other explorer, because Arabic sites works mostly with Internet Explorer because of the language problems.

We are waiting for your repley.

Regards,

the Group (posted 3 Mar 2010)

I am not using internet explorer. I prefer another browser, google chrome. The browser is not the issue I think, because other Arabic website I am using are ok with google chrome. It is only the magalla website. Here is what the problems are:

1. I open the home page to find Arabic readable but words look to be above one another.

2. Some pages open while others don't

3. Sometimes when I send an email, I receive an error message.

I never face these problems with the tariqa website for instance. It is only almagalla website.

I hope my description to the problem is clear and helpful.

Dear Nahed

As for the browser:

Please try the Internet Explorer and you wil find a totally different view even for the tariqa website

As for the error that did appeared before when you send messages:

We did fix it just after you told us and it will not happen again, and if it did please tell us about it.

Anyway, thank you for your continuous effort and we will try to fix this for all other browsers latter, but for the time being, just use the Internet Explorer for our Arabic sites.

and by the way do you think that (كرامات) could be better translated as miraculous acts

Assalamu Alykom,
This is my first comment and I hope it is not the last. I am Ahmed's sister and humbly I suggest altering the translation of "Do you know?" in the English Issue sections to "Did you know?"
Because "Did you know?" means that the event has already occurred, weather if you have a clue about it or not.
You can find the right translation of "هل تعلم" in various glossaries means "Did you know" and if I am wrong please let me know.
Kindly know that I am revising the subjects translated  by Ahmed and I am going to deliver them to him soon.
Thank you, regards

The reason we missed it before is that it was not the right format.

But it fixed now, Thank you.

Hi guys,
Can my next task be to correct the typo errors in the English articles already published. I noticed alot of mistakes in different articles. Moreover, I wonder if you are editing Arabic articles before publishing them. There is a noticeable redundancy in a lot of articles which of course doesn't match English nature.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

(posted 14 May 2010)

Dear Nahed

You will be very much appreciated if you do so, you are also very much welcomed to give us your feedback on the Arabic articles.

You know the translations we receive normally need a lot of work to make sure that it complies with the Arabic meaning without being too much Incomprehensible or unacceptable for the English readers. That is because the Arabic meaning is sometimes not easy to understand even from the Arabic readers. One more thing is that the Arabic articles always needs corrections in order not to be contradicting with the knowledge we know from Mawlana. So with the limited time we have, we often sacrifice correcting typos for correcting meanings.

So if you can help us with that we will be very gratful, in fact if you can do it regularly for every issue it would be great.

Please let us know if can or will.
the Group (posted 14 May 2010)

Sure, I will be more than happy the correction regularly. I will email you soon with the corrections in the first issue. As for the Arabic articles, I can give you my feedback on the articles I have translated so far. I will shortly send you some corrections and feedback.
Best,
Nahed

Hi guys,

Could you please give me an access to these articles so that I can do the modifications directly to them. This will save time and energy. I have a B.Sc. in computer science in U.S., so I can do these stuff easily.

It will be easier for both of us, because there are alot of mistakes.

Nahed (posted 16 May 2010)

Dear Nahed

Unfortunately, It is not even our authority, But we can send you the articles, also some of the changes will be modified as it gave different meaning than the intended. So please continue this way.
the Group (posted 16 May 2010)

Hi,

I find that this way is easier for correction. Just take this and republish it.

Nahed (posted 16 May 2010)

Dear Nahed

This way is great just make your changes with a different color, so as we do not have to revise it again. Because as we told you some of the changes will be modified as it gave different meaning than the intended. What we want to say is you would have gotten our attention to the unclear meaning and we would change it, but we may use different change than the one you gave us because of the unclear meaning.

Thank you

Ahmed (posted 20 May 2010)

Alsalamu Alikum,
I hope everyone is good.
I wonder guys if you have benefited from the corrections I made so far. I have a number of things I need to discuss with the group.
1. I wonder if we can put a tutorial - which all translators can access- on the most common mistakes the translators have committed so far and on some important linguistic/grammatical knowledge which - I guess- might be useful to all of us. This definitely helps improve future translation.
2. What about having a standard model of some important stuff, such as names of books, quotations, etc. I think we need to reach an agreement of these things in order to improve the quality of our translation.
3. Why don't we allow translators to discuss the difficulties they face in the texts they are translating? In other words, if one sentence is ambiguous, the translator can post it in a specific column in the website so that other translators can help him/her understand a meaning or suggest a translation. Cooperation can be extremely helpful, guys, esp. when we are dealing with very elaborate Arabic language.
I look forward to hearing from you soon, guys.
Salam,
Nahed (posted 21 May 2010)

Dear Nahed

Thank you very much for this analysis. That's exactly what we have been trying to do through this Forum 'Translators Group'.

We will appreciate very much your collection of the mistakes you found, for all of us to benefit from.

We also could not use the corrections you sent for the 'Heritage' and the 'blessing' because you did not send us where the corrections were. So, if you would be so kind to send it again with the corrections, we will appreciate it.

You need to know that many of the mistakes you found are commonly known ones but passed by the reviewers because they were much more interested in reviewing the conformity of the English meaning to the Arabic one without being so strange to the English readers. What we mean is that, we will always need your review after publishing.

Hi guys,
I like to share some tips for translation every now and then.
Today's tip is:
"If the mudaf-alih in alidaf construction in Arabic is plural, such as حظيرة خيول, convert it into singular in English, so it will be translated as "horse stall", not "horses stall"."
Best,
Nahed (posted 26 May 2010)

Thank you Nahed.

the Group (posted 23 May 2010)

Hi guys,
Today's tip:
If the target sentence contains a relative clause (i.e. a clause starting with what, which, that, etc.), make it a secondary clause using commas and make sure the main clause has its verb.
Example,
Don't do the following:
This book which told us about prophet Mohamed and his companions.
If you put the relative clause between commas, you will easily realize during revision that the main clause is missing a verb.
This book, which told us about prophet Mohamed and his companions, ...[a main verb is missing]
This is very important, guys, at least for readability.
I hope you got the idea
Best,
Nahed (posted 28 May 2010)

Today's tip:
Coherence is an essential feature in any text, whether it is in Arabic or in English. It is important to note how both Arabic and English differ in how they achieve it. Arabic tends, for example, to repeat names and nouns. So you find, for instance, الرجل repeated many times through the whole text. Don't fall under the influence of Arabic, while you are translating into English! The use of pronouns is an important way of achieving coherence in English. This means you can safely translate the repeated names and nouns in Arabic into pronouns in English.
Cheers,
Nahed (posted 2 June 2010)

Today's tip:
Compound Adjective:
If you have the following sentence in Arabic:
الولد عُمرُه 10 سنوات
It will be simply translated into: The boy is 10 years old.
|What if the Arabic sentence is:
الولد البالغ من العمر 10 سنوات أظهر براعة فائقة في كتابة المقال
In this case, البالغ من العمر 10 سنوات will be translated into an adjective in English. What is usually done here is that it will precede "the boy" and be hyphenated;
The 10-year-old boy ... etc.
I hope this is a useful information to know.

Hi guys,
Today's tip:
It is important to know the system of definition in English التعريف. The followings are considered definite in English:
1. Proper names (names of people, cities, etc)
2. nouns preceded by the article "the"
So, "the president" or "President Obama" are both definite, because the former preceded by a definite article and the latter followed by a proper name. The point is that you can't use two means of definition at the same time. In other words, I can't say "the president Obama". Therefore, you can't also say "the prophet Mohamed". You can either say "the prophet" or "Prophet Mohamed".
I hope this piece of info. is helpful. Please, send me any questions or suggestions. I will be happy with your interaction with me.

Dear group,
I have some notes to make after i have been through several articles that took me so much time to translate than what they were supposed to:
I have to say that i am a little struggling with the arabic language when it comes to finding the meaning of an arabic word, my question is about the articles that we translate, are they copied and pasted from an original site or books, or, are they written by individuals? For example, in one article, it may take so much time understanding what certain paragraphs say or meant to say for containing so many descriptive words that must be searched, also when you read a situation or a story that is built upon another one, which is missing in the recent article, and no place to search for the missing situation to be able to comprehend and translate upon knowledge.
Secondly, most if not all of the articles flow as one sentence, no seperations or dots which confuses me the most, since the arabic itself is very complicated.
I am kindly asking the arabic editors to add dots, semicolons, any dividers to make the paragraph easy to understand.
Thirdly, i think that we should share our problems that we face during translation exeprience, that one of us may find it helpful for future trials, and to make the translation process smooth and more productive.
Thanks alot

If you guys define something before you actually mention it, use semicolon when you mention it.

الشيطان والدنيا لهما نفس المملكة الا وهي القلب
If you enumerate use colon
There are three things which keep us away from Allah: Satan, worldly life, and self.

Hello Ahmed

We are happy to have you.

You can start with the Group study of (al-Hajj) (التدراس- الحج) from April 2010 issue.

We wish you good luck and good work.

You can also use the Glossary for the terms we agreed about and where we agreed to have the translation for this verse as:

"My Loved ones study my words with each other" [qasida 47:9].

the Group (posted 26 Jul 2010)

Today's tip:
Some nouns in English are definite and they don't need "the" before them:
1. names of countries and cities
2. names of people
3. Names that are borrowed from Arabic: Allah, Jihad, Fiqh, Sunna.
They are preceded by "the" only if they enter an Idafa contruction.
Example:
1. A knowledgeable scholar of the Fiqh (absolutely wrong). We should remove "the" here. Fiqh is itself definite.
2. A knowledgeable scholar of the fiqh of marriage (perfect), because fiqh here is in an idafa construction.
I hope this is useful, guys. Good luck in translation!

Dear Mahmoud

Welcome to our group

We are from different countries: Sudan, Egypt, Germany, Tunisia, USA, and Canada. We have also potential writers from other countries. So you are among brothers and friends.

Our main interest as you might have seen is to relate to the pure religion as was known by the companions of the Great Prophet [PPBUH] and our great ancestor scholars. We also try to connect it to what was transferred to us by our sheikhs, without subjectivity.

the link to almagalla is:

the link to the translator group is:

at the top of the translators group page you will find a list of all the articles of almagalla that has been translated or are being translated by some one from the group. So you can select any article from the Arabic issues that has not been translated and let us know about it so as to reserve it for you.

You will notice that the sections of the English issues are less than that of the Arabic issues. That is because the western readers are not interested in the section of the tricks (خدعوا) and it might confuse them. Also, we do not know if they need the section of the sermons (خطب الجمعة). But all other Arabic sections are available for translation.

You can find a list of the Arabic articles in the following link:

You can also find a list of all the translated English articles in the following link:

Looking forward to work with you.

E group (17/9/2011)

Salam alaykum!
Reading the articles and contributions is time consuming because so interesting.
The given information is very precious in the "desert" where I live. "desert" means to me the absence of profound knowledege concerning Allah, prophets, and their relatives and relations to mankind.
I would appreciate to intonate all arabic words in the glossary.
Best wishes and succes.

Ahmad Amin (26/9/2011)

We will try to do that.
