'The Barriers from Al-Mohaimen are four' (qasida 5:16)

This is the motto of this section, which is for talking about the barriers that cuts off the Moslems' relations with Allah [Al-Mohaimen which is a name of Allah that means the Dominant who controls everything]. We need to know these barriers in order for us to be able to avoid or rectify them in our path to Allah.

This section started with a question from one of our viewers, which he sent to the Discussion page. We then found out that it is a big issue that needs more extensive discussion. We found a book made out of a research conducted by a group of brothers which took them 2 years to complete. This book discusses this subject extensively from the point of view of sayyidi Fakhreddin because it was made with the help of some of his older companions. The book's title is "al-Morshid al-Wagis" which means [the summarized guide].

You can find all special expressions in the Glossary. We need your comments to develop this site for you.

He belongs to partners

Allah, Almighty, in His Holy Book is showing us the difference between the human who is controlled by the barriers and the human who is with Allah and out of their reach. Allah said [Allah sets forth an example; a man belonging to quarrelling partners, and a man belonging entirely to one man: are those two equal in comparison? Praise be to Allah! but most of them do not know] az-Zumar 39:29. To examine Allah's saying closely [a man belonging to quarrelling partners,] Allah did not say he has partners, but the partners trying to control him are inside him, i.e. the barriers are pulling him back and forth. He sometime busy with the worldly life with all what it has of pleasures, sometimes occupied with the thoughts, sometimes engaged in committing sins, and sometimes going along with his subjectivity wherever it takes him. So the partners in the verse are each trying to take him for itself only. It was said:

[I suffered four that are throwing at me

arrows from an arc that is strained]

[Satan, worldly life, myself, and subjectivity

O, Lord, only you are capable of saving me]

Imam Fakhreddin [AAH] said:

[The Barriers from Al-Mohaimen are four

what an evil goods, its good part is also evil]

As Satan is always driving him to commit sins, while worldly life wants him emerged in its desires and pleasures. His self is ramified, so he is among the evil inclined self, reproaching, reassured, or another one of the selves mention in the Book of Allah. As for subjectivity, the last one, it is the worst of all the barriers, as it is always driving him to breach the scripts and not to follow them. Ahmad ibn Sahl [AAH] said: You have four enemies:

First one: the worldly life, whose weapon is meeting the creatures and whose prison is solitude.

Second one: the subjectivity, whose weapon is talking and whose prison is silence.

Third one: Satan, whose weapon is fullness and whose prison is starving.

Forth one: the self, whose weapon is sleeping and whose prison is staying up at night.

The second man in the verse [a man belonging entirely to one man], they said about him: He is pure for Allah, the creatures does not have any share in him, nor is he related to the worldly life, he is strange from hereafter, and close and repenting to Allah. The ascetic has renounced all the business of the worldly life, so he worships his Lord fearing and hopping. The knowledgeable has been freed from both worlds, so worships his Lord longing to meet Him. There is no equality between the inactive and the seeker, also between the cut loose and the connected.

In their inequality, they said: the conjoint heart is not at all equal to the solitary purified heart for Allah. The conjoint hear is divided in concerns, his lights are dispersed due the dispersion of its occupants and associations, and his loving divided due to the division of its shares and its subjectivities. The solitary heart's loving is collected and its lights and secrets are abound as much as it is free of its occupants and associations.

From the wise sayings "As He (Allah) does not like the conjoint deed, He does not like the conjoint heart. He does not accept the conjoint deed, and He does not welcome the conjoint heart". By conjoint deed they meant not purely for the sake of Allah. They also said "empty your hear from the others, it will be filled with the knowledge and secrets".

Imam al-Goneid was asked: How is the way to Connection? He said "with repentance that removes the insistence, with fear that cuts off the postponement, with hope that drives to the ways of action, and with insulting the self that it is close to termination and away from hope". They said to him: How can we be like that? He said "with a solitary heart that contains pure monotheism".

In the narrated Hadith by ibn Magah from sayydi Abdullah ibn Mas'oud [AAH], that he heard the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] say (Whosoever consolidated all the concerns in one concern which is the concern for his hereafter, then Allah will suffice him the concern of the worldly life. But whosoever was dispersed with the concerns of worldly life cases, then Allah will not care in which of its valleys he perishes).

In the "Sunan of ibn Magah" also a narration from sayydi Osman ibn Affan [AAH] that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (Whoever has the worldly life as his concern, then Allah will disperse his matters, make his poverty between his eyes, and he would not get out of the worldly life except what was written for him. And whoever has the hereafter as his intention, then Allah will collect his matters, make his richness in his heart, and the worldly life will come forced to him).
