Those who love in Allah

Al-Harith Al-Muhassiby said "Love is your total attraction to the beloved one, then favoring him over your self and soul, then your concurrence with him both within your heart and on your lips, and then realizing your incapacity in his love".

Know, my honorable brother and sister that all intimate friendships and companionships end on doomsday, except the intimate friendship of those who love one another in Allah. As reported in a Hadith, they will be in the shade of the throne whereas the rest of people will be in the heat of the sun; their light will cover people on the day of that gathering; prophets and martyrs will envy them for their stature with Allah. It was said "O' messenger of Allah, who are they? Describe them to us so that we could identify them". The Prophet [PPBUH] replied (People of diverse clans gathering up for the Dhikr of Allah).

It was reported in Imam Malik's [AAH] Mowatta' that sayydi Mua'z [AAH] said that he heard the Prophet [PPBUH] saying (Allah says: My love is due to those who love one another for Me, who convene for Me, who sacrifice giving for Me, and who visit one another for Me). Moreover, in Abi-Muslim Al-Khulany's narration, the Prophet [PPBUH] said (Those who love one another in Allah rise above pulpits made of light and are situated in the shade of the throne, on the day when there is no shade but His).

Furthermore, in another Hadith (Whenever two people love one another in Allah, they would be given a seat to sit on until He finishes judgment). The Prophet [PPBUH] said (For those who love one another in Allah, their rooms are seen in paradise as bright stars in the horizon. It will be asked: who are these? And will be answered: they are those who love one another in Allah, Almighty).

In another narration (In paradise, there are rooms whose outside can be seen from the inside, and whose inside from the outside, which Allah has prepared for those who love one another in Allah, who visit one another for Him, and who give for Him).

In another narration, the Prophet [PPBUH] said (In paradise, there are pillars made of sapphire, above which are place rooms made of aquamarine with open doors, shining like a bright star). We asked: "who lives in them?" He replied (Those who love one another in Allah, who sacrifice giving in Allah, and who convene in Allah; it is written onto their faces: those are the ones who love one another in Allah).

Also it was reported that: On the judgment day, an announcer asks: Where are those who love one another in Allah? To whom a small number of people respond and rush into paradise in a hurry, being met by angels who ask them: We see you rushing into paradise in a hurry, so who are you? They reply: We are those who love one another in Allah. The angels ask: And what is your love about? They answer: We love one another in Allah, visit one another for Allah, sympathize towards one another for Allah, and sacrifice giving in Allah' -sacrifice giving means: commiserate with one another through giving- upon which they are told: Enter paradise; how excellent the reward of good-doers is.

It was said that the love of the servant towards his Lord has two reasons:

The first reason: is that the servant contemplates Allah's graceful favors towards him and the various ways of Allah's generous bestowments upon him, for hearts intrinsically love whoever does them favors; this kind of love is denoted as the love of Hawa [subjectivity], and it is an acquired love, because man is totally surrounded by Allah's generous bestowments upon him, which he can observe all around him. Every time he reflects upon a gift of the gifts from Allah, which defy enumeration, calculation, or statistical estimation, it will be like a seed being planted in the soil of his good virtuous heart. So he continues to examine one gift after another, where each gift is greater than the one before. That is because as he examines the gifts, his heart is enlightened and his faith grows, so he becomes able to discover the finer gifts that he could not realize before, and the hidden gifts emerge to him. All this will lead to the expansion of his love.

The second reason: is the unveiling of curtains and the removal of barriers away from the heart's eye so that it can see Allah's beauty and perfection. Beauty and perfection are naturally loved by all hearts. This is the second kind of love: loving Allah because he is worthy of such love, for not only is he beautiful and perfect, he is the creator of beauty and perfection.

These two kinds of love are the ones meant by sayyda Rab'a al-'Adawiya, one the most famous people who have devoted and disciplined themselves in the pursuit of divine love, have been absorbed by it, and even have been totally annihilated beyond their own existence after what they have witnessed of Allah, after their hearts have glanced his intense lights, and after their souls have looked up to an endless sea in which the knowledgeable ones drown. Thus she, sayyda Rab'a al-'Adawiya, said about her love to Allah:

[I love you two loves: One is the love of the inclination,

And the other is because You are worthy to be loved]

[As for the love of the inclination,

it is attending to no one but Your Dhikr]

[And as for the love that You are worthy of it,

It is unveiling the curtains so that I may see You]

[Either way, the credit is not mine,

The credit in both loves is all Yours]

She has associated the love arising from seeing the beauty with worthiness and not the other kind of love, even though Allah is worthy of both kinds of love, because this love is both by him and to him, without the servant's acquisition. While the love due to inclination involves acquisition by the servant, and the servant's deeds are subject to cause. Her saying [it is attending to no one but Your Dhikr] substitutes the effect (Dhikr) for the cause (love). Whereas she meant to say that: It is love for ourselves that is the cause, and [attending to no one but Your Dhikr] is the fruit of such love. Also, saying [unveiling the curtains so that I may see You] substitutes the effect (unveiling) for the cause (love). Whereas she meant to say that: It is love that is the cause and reason for unveiling the curtains so that I saw You with the eyes of my heart.

Additionally, saying that [the credit is not mine] is an affirmation, by her, that both types of love are truthfully from Him, to Him, and by Him and that in fact the credit is not hers for acquiring either type. For He is the one Who grants credit as well as the one Who deserves to be credited and praised. Realizing the difference between the two levels, i.e. the level of loving due to inclination because of receiving Allah's generous gifts and that due to witnessing His beauty, is necessary for every one tasting that love, and realizing that the second level is higher.

Ibn Juzai said "know that the servant's love of his Lord is at two grades. One is the general love that every believer has, and it is a duty. The other is the special love that is unique to those with divine knowledge, the holy people, and those with pure hearts. This special love is the highest of levels and the end of the requested grades. As the rest of the levels of the righteous people, e.g. the rank of the fear, the rank of the hope, the rank of the reliance, and so on, are built upon self related shares, for you see that he who fears actually fears for himself and that he who hopes actually seeks a benefit for himself, as opposed to love, for it is solely for the sake of the beloved, nothing else".
