The honorable companion Qays ibn Saad [AAT]

They spent all their lives without scanting. They are the best creatures, Allah chose them for the company of his Prophet [PPBUH], the chosen one, sayyduna Mohammad, the Arabian, the Quraishi, Taha, the honest one, may Allah gives him His prayers, peace, and blessings for him and for his pure kind family and his auspicious enlightened companions, and gives them lots of peace to the day judgment. Today we approach to them by talking about one of the servants of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] who carried the flag of Ansar in many battles and conquests: he carried the flag of Ansar in the day of the conquest of Mecca and he was a prince on Egypt in the caliphate of sayydi Ali ibn Abi-Talib [AAH]. He is the honorable companion Qays ibn Saad ibn Ebadah ibn Daylam from Ansar [AAH], and he is a great figure of Ansar [AAT]. Those whom Allah said about [And those who before them, held the home and the Faith, love those who fled to them, and find not in their breasts any desire for that which is given them, but prefer to themselves, even though poverty was their own lot, and whoso is saved from the niggardliness of his own self, such are they who are successful] al-Hashr 59:9. This honorable Companion was raised in one of the houses of generosity and liberality of the Ansar, which is the house of Saad ibn Ebadah. Qays' father Saad [AAT] had a strong love for the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] and was always asking for his blessings. Saad was openhanded generous man, who pays the debts of people not related to him, carries the exhausted, and feeds people at the time of starvation. Qays inherited that from his father [AAT]. Ibn Shiba narrated from Ibn Seirin that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] used to distribute the people of Suffa [poor people who have no homes and spent all their time worshiping in the Masjid], in the evening, among some of his companions. So a man would take one or two - until he said ten - of them to offer them dinner, but Saad would always take eighty of them to feed them.

An-Nesa'i narrated from Qays ibn Saad that he said: The Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] visited us in our house. He said (Peace and mercy be upon you). Saad answered with a low voice. I said to him: do not you allow the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] to enter. He said: Leave him... and he said another word that means "Leave him increase his prayer for our peace". The Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (Peace and mercy be upon you). Saad answered again in lower voice. The Messenger of Allah said it again (Peace and mercy be upon you), then he turned back going away, but Saad ran after him and said to him: O, Messenger of Allah, I was hearing you Salute and answering in a lower voice so that you may increase your prayer for our peace. So the Messenger entered, and Saad ordered a wash for him. After the Messenger had his wash, Saad gave him a frock tanned with saffron and Warss [natural plant for red coloring]. The Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] wore it and raised his hand and said (I ask You, O, Allah to make your prayers and peace upon the family of Saad ibn Ebadah). Then the Messenger ate some food.

An-Nesa'i narrated from Mahran ibn Abi-Sheib from Qays ibn Saad that his father gave him to the Prophet [PPBUH] to serve him - they said that he served him for ten years. They said that his father, after he embraced Islam, took Qays by the hand and introduced him to the Messenger and said: This is your servant, O, Messenger of Allah. The Messenger saw the signs of excellence and righteousness in Qays, so got him closer to himself and Qays kept that position for always. Anas, the companion of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said "Qays ibn Saad was to the Prophet like the police chief to the prince".

Before Islam, when Qays used to deal with people with his natural intelligence, they could tolerate a gleam of his mind. There was no one from Medina or from around it, unless he Reckoned very much for his cunning. But when he embraced Islam, Islam taught him to deal with people with his sincerity not with his cunning. He was a pious son to Islam, and so he set aside his cunning, and he never used his deadly maneuvers. Later when he was to face a hard situation, he would miss his restricted cunning and say his famous words "If it was not for Islam, I would have made cunning that can not be tolerated by Arabs". That was because he was extremely intelligent, resourceful, and sharp-witted.

Among his qualities, there was nothing better than his intelligence except his generosity. Generosity was not accidental quality for him, as he came from a deep-rooted family in generosity and liberality. The family of Qays, according to the habits of the wealthy and generous Arabs at that time, used to have a caller who stands on a high place and calls people for food by day, and a lit fire by night to invite traveling strangers to the food. People used to say then "Whoso loves meat and fat should come to the place of Daylam ibn Haritha". Daylam ibn Haritha is the second grand father of Qays. In this deep-rooted house Qays suckled the generosity and tolerance. Abo-Bakr and Omar [AAT] once talked about the generosity of Qays and said "If we left that young man to his generosity, he would finish his father's money". Saad ibn Ebadah knew what they said about his son Qays, so he shouted "who execuse me from ibn Abi-Qouhafa and ibn al-Khattab, they turning my son stingy on me"! Qays lent a big loan to one of his brothers who was in distress, and when the came back to settle the loan, Qays refused to take it and said "We do not take back anything we gave"!

That is how his life was filled with generosity and altruism. We will take just a glance of it: one of it is when he gave up his right to the inheritance of his father and preferred his baby brother to himself. At-Tabary narrated from Abdel-Malik from Atta' that Saad ibn Ebadah divided his money between his sons then died without knowing that his wife was pregnant. So when she delivered her son, sayydi Abo-Bakr and sayydi Omar sent to Qays ibn Saad about that - i.e. that demanded the share of the boy from his father's inheritance - Qays said "A thing that was distributed by Saad, I will not undo it. But you are my witnesses now that my share is his".

About him feeding the food and spending money for the sake of Allah, ibn Saied an-Nass narrated in his books "the Biography" and "the Proprietors of the Sunan" about his graceful doing [AAH] in the day of company of Khabt. They say that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] sent Abo-Obaida in a company that included Mohajirin [Muslims of Mecca] and Ansar [Muslims of Medina]. They were 300 men, and he sent them to sea shore to a precinct of Johaina. They got starving. Qays ibn Saad said: who buys from dates with slaughtered camel, he would give me the camel her, and I give him the dates in Medina. Sayydi Omar ibn al-Khattab said to him - out of fear for him as he has no money, and the money was his father's - "Why is this youth who has no money, takes debt in someone else's money". Qays found a man from Johaina and said to him "sell me your camel, and I will give you a load of the dates of Medina". The man from Johaina said: I do not know you, who are you? Qays said "I am the son of Saad ibn Ebadah ibn Daylam". The man from Johaina said: I know your relation very well. So they talked and Qays bought five camels from him, each for a load of dates, and the man stipulated that the date should be from the dates of the family of Daylam, and Qays said "Yes". The man asked for witnesses, and Qays introduced him to some from the Mohajirin and some from the Ansar. Qays said "Take whoever you like as a witness". Among those who witnessed this, was sayydi Omar ibn al-Khattab. Omar said "I swear to Allah, I cannot witness this. As the money is his father's not his". The man from Johaina said: I swear to Allah that Saad would not let down his son for a load of dates, and I see a good face and a noble act. Qays took the camels and slaughtered it in three place, every day one. On the forth day Abo-Obaida stopped him and said "Do you want to waste your debt while you do not have money". Qays said "I insist on you not to slaughter any more. Do you want to waste your debt". Qays said "O, Abo-Obaida, do you think that Saad ibn Ebadah who settles the debts of the people, carries the exhausted, and feeds people at the time of starvation, would not settle my balance for a load of dates for people of Jihad for the sake of Allah". Sayydi Abo-Obaida almost accepted, but sayydi Omar ibn al-Khattab kept telling him to stop him, until Abo-Obaida stopped him from slaughtering and two camels were left. Qays took them back to Medina as rides, the Muslims took turns on their backs. When Saad knew waht happen to the Muslims of starvation, he said "If Qays is as I know him, he would slaughter for the people. When Qays came back, Saad asked him: what did you do during the starvation of the people? Qays said: I slaughtered for them. Saad said: You were right, then What? Qays said: then I slaughtered. Saad said: You were right, then What? Qays said: then I slaughtered. Saad said: You were right, then What? Qays said: then I was prevented. Saad said: Who prevented you? Qays said: My prince, Abo-Obaidah. Saad said: Why? Qays said: He clamed that I do not have money and the money is yours, and I told him "my father pays the debts of people not related to him, carries the exhausted, and feeds people at the time of starvation". Saad said: I give you four walls of palm trees, each one of them would give you at least fifty loads of dates. the man from Johaina came with Qays and his loads and was fed and given cloth. the Prophet [PPBUH] knew about what Qays did, so he said (He is in a heart of generosity). In the narration of ibn Asaker: the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (Generosity is from the qualities of the people of that house).

Because generosity is connected to courage and the true courage comes from the belief of its man only. This belief that is not formed by a desire or a whim, but by trueness with one's self and sincerity to Allah. So when Moawya opposed Imam Ali [AAT], Qays sat with himself, thought about it, and looked for the truth. When he saw that the truth is with Imam Ali [AAH] he stood lofty by his side, strong and death-defying. In the battles of Seffin, the Camel, and Nahrawan, he was one of their death-defying heroes. He carried the flag of Ansar shouting:

[This the flag that we carried lightly

with the Prophet and Gabriel was our support]

[Whoever has the Ansar as the keeper of his secrets

would not be harmed if he has no one else]

Imam Ali made him ruler of Egypt [AAT]. Moawya always had his eyes on Egypt as the most precious pearl of his expected crown.  So as soon as Qays got this emirate, he got made and feared that Qays would stood between him and Egypt for ever, even if he was victorious over Imam Ali. So he used all his cunning methods that wil stop for nothing. He kept denouncing Qays for Imam Ali [AAT], until Imam Ali called him from Egypt. Qays found a chance to legally use his intelligence, as he knew that Moawya it trying to make him hate Imam Ali, so he thought that the best answer to this cunning is by being more loyal to Imam Ali and the truth he represents. That was the core of the certain the belief of Qays ibn Saad ibn Ebadah, That why he did not think for a moment that Imam Ali made him step down from ruling Egypt, as what is ruling? and what is an emirate to him? as all positions for Qays were just tools to serve his belief and religion, and if his ruling for Egypt was a means to serve what is right, then so is his standing by Imam Ali on the land of the battle, and it is no less in importance and brilliance.

The courage of Qays reaches the top of its sincerity and limit after the martyrdom of Imam Ali and the pledging allegiance to Imam al-Hassan [AAT]. Qays was convinced that al-Hassan [AAT] is the rightful heir for Imam and Caliph, so he pledged allegiance to him and stood by him [AAT] without paying any attention to the dangers. When Moawya forces them to hold their swords, Qays goes out to lead five thousands of those who shaved their heads for mourning of Imam Ali [AAH]. Imam al-Hassan [AAH] preferred to bandage the wounds of the Muslims who had been suffering for too long, and decided to stop the annihilating fight so he negotiated Moawya then he pledged allegiance to him. Qays thought again about the new situation and found out that no matter how correct was Imam al-Hassan, he had an obligation towards his soldiers to consult them about their destiny. So he gathered them and spoke to them saying "If you want I will fight with you until we die, and If you want I will get you the indemnity grant". His soldiers chose the second choice, so he took the grant of indemnity for them from Moawya [AAT] who was very relieved to get rid of his strongest and most dangerous opponent.

In enlightened Medina on the year 59H, the generous cunning man, that Islam tamed his cunning, died. The man who used to say "If it was not that I heard the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] saying: (Cunning and decieving are in hell), I would have been the most cunning man of this nation" Yes, he died leaving the perfumed scent of an honest man hanging on to all what Islam had with him of pact, covenant, and charter.

Those companions has spent their lives serving Allah and His Messenger [PPBUH]'s religion, so would they be stingy with money or worldly life? No, by Allah they did not. Imam Fakhreddin said about that:

[They spent their lives without stinging

and they got the kindness and it was necessity] 68/4

[Monotheism derived the boat of their advancing

until they reached their dwelling destiny with Islam] 68/5

[They were not mention except with their good deeds

and the angels of good tiding say "peace"] 68/8

May Allah lay his prayers and peace upon Mawlana and Sayyduna Mohammad and his family and companions.
