Fasting

In a few days there will come to us one of the greatest months, which is the month of the nation of the Beloved Chosen One [PPBUH]. Imam Seyouty and ibn Asaker narrated that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha'ban is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my nation). It is the month of Ramadan in which Allah revealed Qur'an as He, the Truth Almighty said [The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (and sporadic). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, let him account for it in other days. Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and you should complete the period, and you should say "Allah-u-Akbar" for having guided you, and that you may be thankful] al-Baqarah 2:185.

As Allah preferred Friday to all days, He preferred Ramadan to all months and favored it with the revelation of the Qur'an. The Honest Truthful One told us also that from the many favors of this month are that: its beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness, and its end is freeing from hell. We also find that Allah, Almighty, has favored it with the fasting and the standing for worship, and He ordered us to fast its day, saying [O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may be pious] al-Baqarah 2:183. fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. That is something that worth stopping and thinking about quit well. And in the favors of the fasting of Ramadan there are lots and lots of traces.

Al-Bukhary, Muslim, ibn Magah, at-Turmuzy, Abo-Dawud, an-Nasa'i narrated that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (whoever fasted Ramadan believing and seeking Allah's reword, he will be forgiven for what he did before of sins). In another narration (whoever fasted Ramadan believing and seeking Allah's reword, he will be forgiven for what he did before of sins. And whoever stood for worship in the night of Qadr [destiny] believing and seeking Allah's reword, he will be forgiven for what he did before of sins). So what a favor! The fasting of this month, believing and seeking Allah's reword, leads to the forgiveness of all the past sins of the life. Ishaq ibn Rahawya said that: the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (Three that their prayers are not refused: the fasting one until he breaks his fast, a just Imam, and the prayer of the wronged one, Allah raises it above the clouds and opens the doors of heaven for it, then the Lord, Almighty, says: By My Mightiness, I will make you victorious, even after a while). Al-Bazzar narrated that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said (Three that Allah gave right on Himself to not refuse their prayer: the fasting one until he breaks his fast, the wronged one until he is victorious, and the traveler until returns). So if the prayer of the fasting one is not refused, how about if the fasting is in Ramadan.

At-Turmuzy narrated from Sd. Moaz ibn Jabal that he said: I was with the Prophet [PPBUH] in a travel. One day I was close to him, so I said: O, Messenegr of Allah, tell me about some thing I do to enter paradise and get away from hell? He said (You have asked me a great thing, gut it is easy for those whom Allah made easy: you worship Allah with nothing else, raise up the prayer, pay up the alms, fast Ramadan, and make the Hajj to the House). Then he said (Do you want me to guide you to the doors of goodness: fasting is a protection, alms extinguish sin as water extinguishes fire, and the prayer of a man in the middle of the night) then he recited [Their sides withdraw from their lying places] up to [they used to do] as-Sagdah 32-16-17. then he said (Do not I tell you the head of the matter, its back bone, and the top of its hump?) I said: Yes, o, Messenger of Allah. he said (the head of the matter is Islam, its back bone is the prayer, and the top of its hump is Jihad). Then he said (Do not I tell you about the control of all this?) I said: Yes, o, Prophet of Allah. He held his tongue and said (restraint this unto you). I said: O, Prophet of Allah, are we accounted for what talk? He said (Your mother lost you, O, Moaz. Is there anything that turns people upside down on their faces, or their noses, in hell except what they gain with their tongues?).

About fasting they said it is of two kinds: Apparent Fasting: which is withholding from all things that break the fast accompanied by the intention. And an Intrinsic Fasting: which the protection of the heart from the plagues, protection of the soul from dwelling, and protecting secrets from being noticed.

As we have appearance for the fasting, we also have intrinsic for it. So we should not stop at its appearance only, in order to complete what the Truth wanted of the wisdom of fasting. As the fasting of the worshipers, to be complete, needs to protect the tongue from the backbiting and the sight from looking with doubt. As in the trace (whoever fasts let his hearing and sight fast). As for the fasting of the knowledgeable ones; it is keeping the secret from witnessing any others.

If the servant obeys the commands of the Truth, Almighty, for fasting and withholding from all things that break the fast of the stomach desire and lust, then the end of his fasting is when the night comes at sunset. That is what is meant by the apparent fasting. However, the knowledgeable one does not stop at this extent of fasting, but he upgrades to what is more worthy and precious. So in addition to doing all of the commands of the apparent fasting, he withholds from any others. So the end of this fasting is the witnessing of the Truth. In both matters the apparent fasting is for the worshiper and its intrinsic is for the knowledgeable. The Hadith of the Chosen One [PPBUH] that says (Fast and break the fast for seeing it). "It" here means for the people of Allah: witnessing Allah, Almighty. The scholars say that it means: fast for seeing the crescent of Ramadan and break your fast for seeing the crescent of Shawwal. However, the special ones fast for Allah because of witnessing Allah, they breakfasting by Allah, they seek only Allah, and Allah is their whole concern.

The knowledgeable realizing ones worked on interpreting the verse [O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may be pious]. They said: Fasting is prescribed for you from the desires and the allotments, as it was prescribed for those who sought the path before you of the trusted knowledgeable scholars, while they were striving and exercising, until they reached the yards of the witnessing presence. That you may be pious and avoid seeing the other beings, and discover the secrets of the self. So whosoever has previously been sick with the love of the subjectivity or on a journey seeking the worldly life; let him account for it in other days and those who are strong enough for this fasting, should feed the weak from the provision of assurance and knowledge of the Lord of the worlds. and whoever volunteered for good deeds by guiding the servants of Allah to what makes their assurance stronger and raises it, then it is better for him. And if you, strong ones, continue to fast from the witnessing of the others, and from mixing with the senses after settling in their ranks, then it is better for you and safer. That is if you knew what is the mixing with senses does to your hearts and your wills of weakening. As in the time of this fasting the inspiration and understanding are realized and the lights and knowledge succeed one another. So whoever witnessed that, should continue to fast. And whoever was not able to do it, should wipe for himself and for the days he lost.

They also classified the fasting into three categories: the fasting of the public, the fasting of the special ones, and the fasting of the special of the special ones.

The fasting of the public:

It is as we said before: withholding from the stomach desire and lust for a specified time defined by the Shari'a, which is from sun dawn to sunset. Whoever he did not withhold his senses from committing mistakes, and with the heedlessness of the heart and the leaving the Dhikr. So the one fasting this way did not gain of his fasting except the hunger. That is because he did not see of the truth except its appearance by withholding the two desires only. He did not look at the intention of the Shari'a where the Beloved Chosen One [PPBUH] says (who did not leave the saying and doing of twisted things, then Allah does not need him to leave his food and drink).

The fasting of the special ones:

It is the withholding all senses from the excess, which is all that keeps the servant from reaching out in worship. And its output is: keeping of the apparent and intrinsic senses from being occupied with what is not meaningful.

The fasting of the special of the special ones:

It is keeping the heart from observing anything other than the Lord. And keeping the secret from standing with others. And its output is: withholding from witnessing others, and keeping the heart in the presence of the Mawla [Lord]. The one doing this fasting is continuously fasting for ever.

We can see from the last two categories, the fasting of the special ones and the fasting of the special of the special ones, the relation between the fasting and the barriers, which cut the one from seeking the path of Allah and reaching it. The withholding of all senses and keeping it, apparently and intrinsically, from being occupied with what is meaningless is definitely refining the selves and restraining its trials to control the senses and leading it where it wants. This make the one able to seek the path of Allah and walk it without being detained by his self from the right path. The talk about fasting is endless and we may meet the next time, ISA, to some more.
