The Merits of the Pious

It was narrated that a companion of the prince of believers; Ali [AHHF], whose name was Hammam and he was worshipping man. He once said: O, Prince of believers, describe the pious ones to me, so it would be as if I am looking at them! Imam Ali [AHHF] slackened in answering, then he said: O, Hammam, fear Allah and do good as Allah is with those who fear him, and those who do much good. Hammam was not convinced with that much words, and he insisted on him. So Imam Ali thanked and praised Allah, then he prayed to the Prophet [PPBUH], then said:

Furthermore; Allah, Almighty, created the creation while He did not need their worship, was safe from their disobedience, and has no gain from their obedience. He divided their provisions for them and He put them in the worldly life in their positions. The pious in this life are the people of virtues; their saying is the right, their cloth is the providence, and their walk is the humbleness. They keep their eye closed from what Allah forbad. They saved their hearing for the beneficial knowledge. Their selves acts for them in the ordeals as they act in the welfare. If it was not for their appointed time, their souls would not have settled in their bodies for a moment out of anxiety for reword, and fear of punishment. The Creator was so great in their selves that everything else was small in their eyes. The paradise for them is as if they have seen it, so they are enjoying it. And hell for them is as if they have seen it, so they suffer it. Their hearts are sad, and are immune from their badness. Their bodies are thin, their needs are light, and they are continent. They were patient for few days followed by long rest. A profitable trade; that was made easy for them by their Lord. The worldly life wanted them, but they did not want it, and it captured them, but them ransomed themselves from it.

During the night, they stood with their legs lined and reciting parts of the Qur'an. They mad themselves sad with it and excite with it the cure of their illness. If they pass by a verse that has anxiety they would be pleased with it out of desire and they would long for it, and feel as if it is just in front of them. And if they passed by a verse that has fright, they listen to it with their hearts and feel like the breath of hell is inside their ears. They are kind to their waists, but prostrated their forefaces, hands, knees, and their feet tips, asking Allah to free their necks.

During the day, they are tolerant and knowledgeable, and they are pious and righteous. The fear has thin them out like the arrow is sharpened. One looks at them and thinks they are sick while they are not, and thinks their minds are mixed while it is really mixed but with something great, which is the great fear from Allah. They are not satisfied with less of their work, and they do not think of what is much of it as much. They are always accusing themselves, and afraid of what they did. If someone praised any of them, he would be afraid of what is said and he would say: I know myself better than anyone, and my Lord knows me better than myself. O, Allah, do not hold me accountable for what they say, and make me better than what they think, and forgive for me what they do not know.

One of the signs of some of them is that you see on him strength with religion, resolution with lenience, belief with certainty, keenness with knowledge, knowledge with tolerance, saving with richness, submissiveness with worship, forbearing with poverty, patience with hardship, seeking with lawfulness, activity with guidance, and refraining from greed. He does the good deeds while he is afraid. He reaches the night caring only for thanking Allah, and reaches the morning caring only for Dhikr. He passes the night cautious and reaches the morning joyful, cautious from the heedlessness, and joyful of what he got of grace and mercy. If his self would not follow him to what it dislikes, he would not give it what it likes. He is attached to what does not vanish, and is detached from what does not stay. He mixes tolerance with knowledge, and working with saying. You see his hope is close, his faults are few, his heart is submissive, his self is content, his eating is little, his matter is easy, his religion is secured, his desire is dead, and his anger is suppressed. You expect good from him and you fear no bad of him.

If he was one of the heedless, he would be written among the people of Dhikr, and if he was of the people of Dhikr, he would not be written among the heedless ones - This means that: if he stopped the Dhikr of Allah, he heart would be in Dhikr, and if is among those do Dhikr with their tongue, he would not be just doing that with tongue without the heart - He will forgive whoever wrongs him, give whoever deprived him, and connect to whoever disconnect him. His cursing is far, his saying is nice, his badness is absent, his goodness is present, his good is coming closer, his bad is going away, in earthquake he is dignified, in hateful events he is patient, and in good events he is thankful. He does not wrong whom he dislikes, and he does not do bad to whom he likes. He admits the truth before he is testified against. He does not loss what he was entrusted. He does not forget what he is reminded. He does not denounce the names. He does not harm the neighbor. He does not become joyful for the calamities. He does not enter the false and does not get out of the right. If he is silent, he would not be sad for it. If he laughs, his voice would not be high. If he was wrong he would be patient until Allah avenges him. His self is in hardship from him, while people are at ease from him. He tired himself for his hereafter, and relieved the people from himself. His being away from whoever got away from him is out of asceticism and renunciation, and his closeness to whoever got close to him is out of lenience and mercy. He does not go away out of pride or arrogance, nor does he get close out of cunning and deceit.

The narrator said: Hammam was stunned a stun that gave his death. The prince of believers [AHHF] said: O, by Allah I was afraid for him of it. Then he said: that is how the good advices do to its people. Someone said: why not you, O, Prince of believers? Imam Ali said: Lo! Bad with you! Everyone has his time that cannot go before and a reason that he cannot do without. Do not do this again, as that was Satan blowing on you tongue.

The words of Sd. Ali [AHHF], the door of the city of knowledge, were finished. May Allah makes us from those, whom He described as the pious people, Amen.
