The Great companion Abo-Zarr al-Ghifary [AAH]

The Prophet [PPBUH] said (Abo-Zarr walks on earth with the asceticism of Essa ibn Maryam [PBUH]). At-Turmuzy. Al-Ma'rour ibn Sowaid said "I met Abo-Zarr in ar-Rabzah. He was wearing a suit and his boy, attendant, wearing a suit. So I asked him about that. He said: I cursed a man, and I mentioned his mother. So the Prophet [PPBUH] said to me (O, Abo-Zarr, did you insult his mother? You are a man with some pre-Islamic ignorance. You are entrusted with your brothers. Allah made them under your hands. So whoever has his brother under his hand, then he should feed him from his food and let him wear of his cloth. Do not order them to do what they cannot, and if you did, then you should help them)". Al-Bokhary and Muslim.

This great companion was from Mecca suburbs. From one of the volleys that connected Mecca to the external world. These valleys were obligatory passages between Mecca and the external world. One of these valleys was named Wedan, where the tribe of Ghifar lived. One may ask: why in the valley? It is because the valley is where the water flows down, and in the bottom of it the water may accumulate, and the grass may grow. That is why this tribe of Ghifar lived in the bottom of the valley that connected Mecca to the external world, i.e. on the way. Ghifar was a very poor tribe. They lived on the very little donations left for them from the passing convoys, i.e. they lived on their crumbs. Sometimes they highway robbed to live. Gandab ibn Gonadah, known as Abo-Zarr was one of the people of this tribe, Ghifar, which lived in that place. But this companion was a very courage hearted, wise minded, and long sighted man. His instinct stopped him from worshipping the idols. He used to be unable to bear these idols that were worshipped instead of Allah. He used to condemn his people for their corrupted religion and their stupid belief. So Abo-Zarr [AAH] was not able to bear his people and was looking forward with his instinct to the appearance of this new prophet who would fill the hearts and minds of the people and would take them out of the darkness to the light.

Sayydi Abo-Zarr had emptiness and continuous search. Then he heard, while he was in his desert, the news about the Prophet [PPBUH] who appeared in Mecca. He said to his brother Anys "Go to Mecca, and get the news about that man who clams to be a prophet and has revelation from heaven. Listen to some of his words and get it back to me". Anys went to Mecca, met the Prophet [PPBUH], and heard him. Then he came back to the desert and his brother received him with eagerness and asked him about the news of the new prophet with passion. Anys said "By Allah, I saw a man calling for the good manners and saying words that are not poetry". Abo-Zarr said "what do the people say about him"? Anys said "They say that he is a sorcerer, a priest, or a poet". Abo-Zarr said "By Allah, you did not quench my thirst or serve my need. So, will you take care of my children until I go see about this man"? Anys said "Yes, but be be careful from the people of Mecca, as this man is fought there, and if they knew that you are coming for him, they may kill you".

Abo-Zarr reached Mecca while being cautious and afraid of its people, as he heard news about their anger for their gods and their exemplary punishment for whoever thinks about following sayyduna Mohammad. So he hated to ask anyone about sayyduna Mohammad, as he would not know if the one he asks would be with or against him; sayyduna Mohammad. When the night came he laid down by the Ka'ba. A man passed by him. This man was sayydi Ali. He knew that Abo-Zarr was a stranger, so he said to him "Come with me, O, man". Abo-Zarr went with him and spent the night in his home. In the morning, he carried his water and food and went back to Ka'ba without asking anyone about anything. He spent his second day without recognizing the Prophet [PPBUH]. When it was night again, he laid down by the Ka'ba. Then sayydi Ali [AAH] passed by him again and said to him "Is it not time for you to know you home yet"? Then he took Abo-Zarr to his home, where he spent his second night. Neither of them asked his companion about a thing. When the third night came sayydi Ali asked him "would not you tell me about what brought you to Mecca"? Abo-Zarr said "If you give me your word that you would show me what I want, then I will tell you". Sayydi Ali gave him what he wants of his word. Abo-Zarr then said "I aimed for Mecca from a far place hoping to meet the new prophet and listen to some of his sayings". Sayydi Ali cheered up and said "By Allah, he is really the Messenger of Allah".

This is like the saying of Allah [Then did you come hither as ordained, O Moses] Taha 20:40. As Allah knew his honesty so He gathered him with a great companion, the cousin of the Prophet [PPBUH]. He said "by Allah he is really the Messenger of Allah, and he is so and so , …" and he told him about the Prophet [PPBUH], and he said "when the morning comes, you follow me wherever I go. You walk behind me. If I saw anything that fear for you, I will stop as if I am spilling water". He gave him a signal to be agreed upon. He said "So when you see that you go back, and if when through, you follow me until we go to Him". Abo-Zarr could not sleep all night out of anxiety to see the Prophet and hear him and listen to his revelation. In the morning, Ali [AAH] went out with his guest to the house of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH]. Abo-Zarr went after him on his track, with nothing in his mind, until they entered to the Prophet [PPBUH]. They say that the first companion to salute the Prophet [PPBUH] with the Islamic salute, was Abo-Zarr. Was not he a wise man? Yes, when he saw the Prophet [PPBUH], he said "Peace be upon you, O, Messenger of Allah".

There is a good saying here: When a man talks, he either goes up or falls down. Az-Zuhair ibn Abo-Salama said in his famous long poetry:

[And you see some being and you like

But his increase or decrease is when he talks]

Sayyda Omar was once walking in the street, and he said "Peace be upon you, O people of light". He did not say "O, people of fire".

So the Prophet [PPBUH] replied to Abo-Zarr (and Peace of Allah and His Mercy and Blessings be upon you). As when you say "Peace be upon you", it means: I am a man of good, so do not be afraid of me. So a man should use more of this "Peace" [Salam], even when he comes to his family. When a man comes to a place, he starts with "Salam". That was what Abo-Zarr did, and became the first one to salute the Messenger with the salute of Islam, and then it spread all over. The Prophet [PPBUH] started to tell Abo-Zarr about Islam, and read Qur'an to him. Abo-Zarr did not leave his place before he declared the words of truth and embraced the new religion; Islam. He was the fourth or the fifth man to embrace Islam. Some companions use to say "I was one third of Islam", he means that he was only preceded by two men before him. Now let's look about ourselves, how many ones preceded us? One thousand and two hundreds thousands preceded us? So sayyda Abo-Zarr was one over four when he entered Islam. What did Quraish do when they knew about his Islam? How did he survive killing? And what did the Prophet [PPBUH] ordered him to do?

Abo-Zarr said "I stayed with the Messenger of Allah in Mecca, and he tought me Islam, and read to me some Qur'an. Then he said to me (Do not tell anyone in Mecca about your Islam. As I fear for you that they might kill you). But I said: by Allah, I will not leave Mecca until I go to Ka'ba and scream with the call of truth among Quraish. The Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] did not say anything more. Then I went Ka'ba while Quraish are sitting talking, I stood among them and shouted with my highest voice: O, people of Quraish: I testify that there is no god but Allah, and Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah. As soon as my words touched their ears, they panicked and stood up and shouted among each other: come to this disbeliever. So they all came to me and started beating on me to die. Al-Abbas ibn Abdel-Muttalib; the uncle of the Prophet [PPBUH] came to my rescue and put his body over me to protect me, and he said to them: Lo! Do want to kill a man from Ghifar, while all your trade and convoys pass through their land".

Abo-Zarr said "when I woke up from my unconsciousness after I have been badly beaten, I came to the Prophet [PPBUH]. When he saw what happened to me, he said (O, Abo-Zarr, did not I prevented you from announcing you Islam)? I said: O, Messenger of Allah, it was something that I needed to do. He said (Go back to your folks. Tell them what saw and heard and call them to Allah. May Allah benefits them from you and gives you their reword). He continued (when you hear about my victory, then come back to me)".

Abo-Zarr said: I left to the homes of my folks. So I met my brother Anys. He asked me: What did you do? I said "I embraced Islam, and I believed". Soon Allah cleared his chest and he said to me: I do not want any other religion. I embraced Islam and believed too". We came to our mother and called her to Islam -as a woman has great value, being a mother and a wife- she also said: I do not want another religion, and she embraced Islam too.

From that day on, this believing family went out calling for Allah, with no weakness or boring. Until many people from Ghifar embraced Islam. They raised their prayers. Like the words of Allah [Verily, Ibrahim was a nation] an-Nahl 16:120. Ibn Omar said: the Messenger of Allah said (Ghifar was forgiven by Allah, Most of them embraced Islam, and few of them disobeyed Allah). Muslim from ibn Omar.

Abo-Zarr stayed in his desert until Badr, Uhud, and al-Khandaq passed. Then he came to Medina and was devoted to the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH]. He asked the permission of the Messenger to stay in his service, and he was given the permission. So he stayed in the company of the Prophet and was happy to serve him. The Messenger of Allah kept favoring and honoring him, as he never met him unless he shook his hand and smiled at him with a happy face.

When the Prophet [PPBUH] passed to the Higher Companion, Abo-Zarr could not bear to stay in Medina without its Master and his guiding sitting. He left for the desert of ash-Sham. He stayed there for the period of the caliphate of sayydi Abo-Bakr and sayydi Omar [AAT]. In the caliphate of sayydi Osman, the one with the two lights, he went to Damascus. He astonished at what he saw of how Muslims were engaged into the worldly life and how they were emerged into the luxury. He denounced that, so Osman called him to Medina. He came to Medina, but he soon became unable to bear the desire of the people in the worldly life, and people could not bear his toughness and his denunciation for them. Osman ordered him to go to Arrabza, which is a little village of Medina's villages. He went there and stayed in it away from people, abandoning what in there hands of the signs of the worldly life. He held on to what the Prophet [PPBUH] and his two companions believed in from favoring the everlasting to the transitory.

One day a man came to him and looked around his home and found it to be not furnished. So he asked him: O, Abo-Zarr where is your belongings? Abo-Zarr said "we have a house there, where we send all our good belongings". The man understood what Abo-Zarr meant, as he meant the house of the hereafter. But the man said: but you still have to have some belongings as long as you stayed in this life. Abo-Zarr said "but the owner of this house will not let us stay in it".

Once the prince of ash-Sham sent him three hundred Dinars and said to him: use it to support you with your needs. Abo-Zarr returned it back to him and said "did the prince of ash-Sham not find any servant of Allah easier than me"?

In the year 33 of Hijra Allah chose this acetic servant for his company, the one about whom the Prophet [PPBUH] said (the green did not shad and dusty did not carry anyone who is more honest, loyal, and truthful than Abo-Zarr. He is like Essa ibn Maryam [PBUH]). at-Turmuzy. May Allah accept all these companions of the Prophet Mohammad [PPBUH]. May Allah with intersession of the Beloved horror us by sayydi Abo-Zarr and gather us with them and please our sheikhs and masters. Amen.
