No one is more knowledgeable than me!

Claiming knowledge the lesion of all times. There has never been an era without it. It is a defect that is suffered by only those without Fiqh. I once heard a simple man, like myself, saying: «I do not know of anyone in Egypt with more knowledge than me, and if I knew of anyone like that, I would have gone to him to get his benefits». This man seemed insane and its least punishment is that he deprived himself of the blessings of the knowledgeable of his age and died with ignorance.

I have seen a man who clamed to be a Kotb [a pole man who is delegated to be the caliph of Allah on earth], and he said: «Allah informed me of all the circle of saints and I have not seen that man», and he pointed to one of the virtuous people of his time. One of the people of the meeting said to him: «If you are truthful, then tell me how many hairs in your beard?» He got confused, did not know what to say, and was shamed among the men.

If Allah has prevented the knowledgeable from claiming the knowledge despite their what they know, so how about who does not know and still claims knowledge.

Sheikh of Islam Zakria [AAH] said: One day, in a session for al-Hassan al-Basry [AAH], there were five hundreds inkstand to write knowledge from him. He got a little bit proud internally, so he said: «If you ask me, in this session, about any science, I would tell you about it». A little beardless weak boy leaning on s stick stood and said to him: «Sir! we heard what you said, so does a mosquito have paunch or bowels». The color of al-Hassan changed - he knew he has done something wrong. He turned yellow, fainted, and was carried out home. Three days latter he died. Imam al-Hassan al-Basry does not need introduction, but look at his fear from Allah when sensed his pride, and it was only one time.

The perfect sheikh Mohyeddin ibn Arabi [AAH] said, about himself, that once he was on board a ship in the big sea. The sea got rough and the wind became heavy. So he said to the sea: «Settle down, o, sea, as above you is a sea of knowledge». A sea creature came out and said to him: «We heard what you said. So what do you say about a woman, whose husband was mutated - like when some men were punished by Allah and were mutated into monkeys - Should she wait, the Edda - the waiting time the woman waits after she is separated from her husband by divorced or by death - of the living or the dead». Imam Mohyeddin resumed: I did not know what to say. the creature told him: «I can tell you the answer, but you have to accept me as a sheikh for you». He said: «Yes». The creature said: «If he was mutated as animal, she waits the Edda of the living - as if she was divorced - but if he was mutated as a rock or inanimate being, she waits the Edda of the dead». Imam Mohyeddin mentioned this story in his biography about his sheikhs of Jinn, Humans, Angels, and Animals. It was told that never been seen or even smelled as proud after that.

Whoever sets to go in the way of the people of Allah, he will need a sheikh to take him by the hand and show him Allah's Hadra of knowledge and divine coffers to see that all what he has been taught is nothing but a drop from the ocean.

sheikh Afdal-addin enduced from the Surat of al-Fateha, one hundred and forty two thousands kinds of science. He mentioned, in his book: Alerting the Stupid, what is considered as much as a drop from the sea of the saints of Allah's knowledge. He mentioned only three thousands kinds of that knowledge, which cannot be comprehended by any human until he sees their names, as it would not pass by anyone's mind.

So look dear brother for what you know of Fiqh, grammar, and principles, you would find that it is only a drop from the vast sea of the science of the people of Allah Almighty. And If we know that Ibn as-Sobky, in the middle classes, related to Imam Abi-al-Kasim al-Gonid [AAH], that he said about the knowledge Allah gave to him: «Allah did not send down from heaven any kind of knowledge, and made a way for people to have it, unless He gave me some of it». So can we claim knowledge.

So we need to seek an order on the hands of a sheikh of these. As a seeker with them, when he gets to the Hadra, would find all his internal and external characteristics as borrowed and entrusted to him form Allah, so it is not his acceptable to claim any of it for himself. One should be shy from Allah to do something like that, as people would see him as a knowledgeable man, but he would see himself as an ignorant. In this state he would be secured from claiming any state or saying to himself in public or in secret. Whoever does not go this way will mostly be veiled and subject to his own straying claims and what a bad way!

So you should pursue a way for manners on the hands of a sheikh, even if you see yourself as quite informed, you would discover your ignorance, when you join the way to Allah, and Allah would grant you guidance.

In the story of s Moses and al-Khidr [PBUT] there is enough for anyone who is sane. As al-Khidr said to s Moses: «O, Moses! I am the most knowledge of all people of earth. But my knowledge and yours in the knowledge of Allah, is as this bird would pick from this sea». Allah said: [And of knowledge you have not been given except a little] al-Isra' 17:85.
