For an Honest Seeker (last episode)

We ended our last discussion describing backbiting with a Hadith of our Prophet [PPBUH]: (Whoever says what is in his brother, has backbited him)... Anas also narrated that the prophet [PPBUH] said: (anything you say about others is considered as backbiting except when you praise them). that is the ultimate emphasis on the severity of backbiting. Backbiting as described by the Prophet [PPBUH] as saying what you know attributed to your brother, then he [PPBUH] emphasized it more when he said that it is worse that adultery. So whenever you mention your brother with what you know for sure that is attributed to him which you do not mention in his presence, which disparage him or do not praise him, then you have backbite him. So if silence was only to protect yourself from backbiting, then it would have been great prize. So about when the Prophet [PPBUH] said: (All humans’ words are counted against them except when they invite to goodness, prevent evil, or Dhikr Allah) [reciting the name of Allah].

Accompanying people weakens one’s strong intention towards good deeds, and resolves the contract which was accomplished during his solitude. Many people encourage sins and aggression and few of them encourage good deeds and piety. Mingling with people increases the caring and seeking for near worldly life because one  sees how its people are occupied with it. One also languishes from the service because of looking at the heedless people, and becomes weary of obedience by sitting with idle people. One will also suffer the decrement of the sweetness of the treatment, the vanishing of the light of knowledge, the fast departure of passion in understanding because of listening to ignorant people and looking at dead people of the worldly life. It was narrated that Isa (Jesus) [PBUH] said: "Do not sit with dead people or your hearts will die". They said to him: and who are dead people? He said: "people who love and want worldly life". Al-Hasan used to say about Allah's words: [nor are the living equal to the dead] Fatir 35:22, that they are the poor and the rich; the poor survived on Dhikr Allah, Almighty, and the rich died on the love of the worldly life.

The worst thing about mingling and sitting with idle heedless people is that it weakens the certainty by just looking at them. The worst that can happen to a slave of Allah, helps his fast ruining, and his obstruction from Allah, is the weakness of his certainty of what Allah promised in secret and what He threatened in public. That was the most of what the Prophet fear for his people as he [PPBUH] said: (What I fear the most for my people is weak certainty). Weak certainty is the origin of wanting the worldly life, seeking to get more of it, and flattering it people slavishly craving after what they have.

Ibn Mas'oud said: One gets out of his home with all his religion, and comes back with nothing. He meet this and says: "you are so and so", and meets this and says: "you are so and so". He may get nothing out of them, but gets back home with the discontent of Allah.

Some followers said: A man acquires good qualities during his resolute, but once he gets out to people they start untying his knots one by one until he returns back home with all his knots untied.

On the other hand, a strong certainty is the source of all good deeds, because in this certainty lies his fast return, his long stay in his place of residence, his preference of the lasting to the evanescent, the weakening of his stinginess, the lessening of his demand, the loss of his greed, the stopping of his interest in the instant, the devoting to what is recommended for him from the beginning, and in all that, his devotion to his deeds, his real asceticism in all his conditions, the shortening of his hopes, and the improvement of his deeds.

As it was described in Quran about that who was occupied with reproduction and growing until he visited the graves, and how Allah threatened him to inform him for sure of what is to happen to him when he goes back to his destiny. Allah said: [Rivalry, mutual vainglory about wealth, children and men, distracts you, preoccupies you] al-Takathur 102:1, i.e. collecting for piling up of wealth, children and men preoccupied you until you went to your graves. Then He said: [No indeed! Were you to know with certain knowledge] al-Takathur 102:5, i.e. if you know the consequences of your vainglory,  you would be preoccupied with the good deeds for the hereafter you, instead of play and pastime which is the result of doubt that is against certainty, and you would have been busy with the hereafter rather than the vainglory and piling up from this worldly life. He also said: [‘Our Lord! We have seen, and heard, So send us back, so that we may act righteously, for indeed we are convinced, now] as-Sajdah 32:12, after He said: [Nay, but they linger in doubt, playing]  ad-Dukhan 44:9, then He threatened them twice about playing and vainglory. He threatened to ask them in the day of Resurrection about the comforts of the world, that preoccupied them, which is vainglory in the transient pleasures.

They also say that it is collecting while preventing. So let it be known that what stops the slave of Allah from repentance and turns the repentant away from straightness are three things: earning, spending, and collecting. These causes are connected to the creatures, their existence is connected to the creatures', and they would be lost if separated from the creatures. So whoever abstain from these three, he is in fact abstaining from all creatures and whoever desire the creatures, is actually desiring these three.

Al-Thawry said: whoever mingles with people, will humor them, and whoever humor them, will dissemble them, and whoever dissemble them, will commit what they commit and will be ruined as they will.

Some righteous people said: I once said to one of al-Abdal [substitutes-saints], who are devoted away from the creatures: How is the way to realization? another time I said to him: Tell me something I do to get my heart to be with Allah, always and at all times? He said to me: do not look at the creatures, as looking at them brings you darkness. I said to him: But I have to? He said: Then do not listen to their speech, as it gives you cruelty. I said to him: But I have to? He said: Then do not deal with them, as it is desolation. I said to him: I live with them, so I have to treat them somehow. He said: Then do not have confidence in them, as it is perdition. I said: That is what is wrong with me. He said: Hay, you! you look to heedless people, hear the words of ignorant ones, and deal with idle ones, yet you want to get your heart to be with Allah, Almighty, at all times? This cannot be.

There were many things told about merit of retirement and solitude and about the advantage of silence. In all what we mentioned before, about hunger and staying awake at night worshiping, you mat find enough advice for those seekers how want the hereafter and work for it with strong belief. For those who prefer this worldly life, we say that there is no strength no power but from Allah.
