His Tolerance and his Calling to Allah

We continue our speech about the word "the Messenger" where it was first mentioned in the Holy Quran in verse 143 of al-Baqarah. It was when we talked about his nation [PPBUH] being an intermediate nation, their witness on the people, and his witness [PPBUH] on his nation. The Qur'an gave this intermediation a great consideration which indicates its great importance. Strive, patience, trial and dispute among the spectrums of this nation. We have to focus on what the verse showed us regarding the fact that the whole difference between the intermediation of the nation and its way on one side and its enemies on the other side, is due to a serious illness which is stupidity or foolishness. Allah, Almighty, showed this in the Holy Qur'an when He said [the Sofaha' among the people will say "What has turned them away from their Qiblah, which they used to face?". Say "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path"] al-Baqarah 2:142.

Safaha noun, Sofaha' plural adjective: in Arabic language means the ones with little toleration or just the opposite of toleration. Some people of language said that the origin of Sofaha' is the onea who are light in mind. It was also said that the Sofaha' are the light and rash ones.

Ibn Kathir said in his interpretation: the Sofaha' here means polytheists of the Arab. Also it is said that it was the Jewish‘s rabbis. Also it is said that it is the hypocrites. The verse refers to all these meanings.

Al-Qortobi [AAH] said that ibn Abbas said: When the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] immigrated for Madina, Allah, Almighty, ordered him to pray towards the Qiblah of Jerusalem for a few months more than ten. The Jewish were rejoiced. The Messenger of Allah [PPBUH], actually loved to pray towards the Qiblah of Ibrahim, so he used to pray and look to the sky. Then Allah, Almighty, revealed down [turn your faces towards it] al-Baqarah 144, it meant towards the Sacred House. The Jewish got suspicious and said "what has turned them away from their Qiblah, which they used to face?" So Allah revealed down [To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path].

In this regard there are many Hadith. The thing is that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] was ordered to pray toward the Rock of Jerusalem. So, in Mecca, he used to pray behind Ka’ba and towards Jerusalem, so he would be facing both Qiblah at the same time. But when he migrated to Medina, he could not combine between the two Qiblah. Allah then ordered him to pray towards Jerusalem. This was said by ibn Abbas among others.

Who analyses the sayings of the interpreters about describing the polytheists of people of sculpture and the hypocrites as being Sofaha', he would see clearly the mercy of the Prophet [PPBUH]. As his praying towards the Qiblah of Jerusalem was not but one of the appearance of his being the Gifted Mercy and his being sent as a Mercy to the Worlds. It was a lesson for the preachers of his nation on how to call for Allah using wisdom and good preaching, not with subjectivity and desires. All what happened was just to bring together the hearts of those who rejected him, his religion, his tribe and the people who helped and immigrated with him. He would not be despaired of guiding any ones even if he was sure that they were deeply misguided, he would still be patient just in case that one of them may be guided to the right path. Actually, one is not too little, as other people may be born of him to worship Allah. Few months more than ten in the life of this Arabian Prophet is not a little time, but he was teaching the nation and the its preachers that there are diseases in the hearts, defects in the selves and desires in the human nature that need patience. That is the right of  the patient and the duty of the doctor. The writer of al-Fotohat al-Maccaiya [AAH] said “Everyone is sick but Allah. Every sick one is curable. Every curable necessarily needs a doctor”. The foolishness of the Sofaha' is a serious disease that needs a skillful and expert preacher, so how do you think of their master and best example, our Prophet [PPBUH]?!!

You can be sure of that, if you noticed how the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] practiced the mercy, the bringing of the hearts together, and the overlooking and forgiving of the abuses of the surrounding polytheists and hypocrites while they paid no attention to his suffering, virtues or his pure human rights as a man not as a Messenger of Allah:

[He is a mercy and mothers followed his example

"a Merciful Lord", his Lord named Him] 19/12

Calling to Allah by the righteous ones of the nation:

The righteous ones considered the treating of the heart diseases through two serious descriptions of those how should take over the mission of calling to Allah. These two descriptions are love and good morals. If they wanted to guide someone, they gradually nurse him love as they treat him well, forgive and overlook his misconducts and offer him grace, generosity and hospitality exactly as their grandfather - their best example – did:

[Al-Mostfa -the Chosen- the infallible who       is the model to be followed] 11/15

This is how you see them if you do see them or you like to see them. They always do as the doctors do. As doctors have to know the symptoms of the disease, its apparent and hidden signs. They have to diagnose the disease then define the medicine that should be formed by a chemist. This is exactly what the callers to Allah with insight did learn. This insight has been acquired the complete following of the Messenger [PPBUH].

Among what we have learned from the instructions of Imam Fakhreddin [AAH]  is what he clarified accurately when he said: if the heart is occupied with the pleasures of the worldly life, it will be in the state of "worries and concerns", If it is occupied with following Satan, then its state will be "Subjectivity". If it is occupied with following the Prophet [PPBUH] it will be in the state of "vigor". If it is dyed with the lights of Dhikr of Allah, it will be in the state of "inspiration".

So the pure following to Satan is known as subjectivity. If the foolishness of the Sofaha' increases, then the subjectivity gets inclined to the self, then the self would follow its subjectivity. If the person occupies himself with obeying Allah, then the subjectivity gets inclined to the mind, then the mind will rule with the Prophet’s speech [PPBUH] (no one would be a believer until his subjectivity would be according to what I come with). Imam as-Seyouti in "the collection of the collections". It means that this man has no love except the love to Shari'a. Imam Fakhreddin [AAH] said "subjectivity is love. So loving the Safaha is indecency and foolishness, and loving righteousness is righteousness".

We have to warn ourselves against mingling with the Sofaha' and bad friends, So the Prophet’s [PPBUH] warned us of this and said (a man's religion is the same as his intimate friend's). Morals peculates from morals.

Imam al-Shafei’y [AAH] said "whoever wants Allah to bless his heart with the light of wisdom, he should enter retreat, eat less, abandon the company of the Sofaha' and some scholars who does not have politeness or fairness".

I said: look at Imam al-Shafei'y's great experience and understanding [AAH] when he compared some scholars to Sofaha' because they lacked politeness and fairness. Then look at how he considered Safaha, impoliteness and unfairness to be barriers for the light of wisdom from entering the heart. That is the true reason for the standard of our scholars nowadays.

Ibn Agiba said that Allah said in the book of "the awakening of the vigor": If Allah said in the verse 5 of an-Nisa' [do not give your money to the fool], so how about the knowledge which is preserved pearls. The Prophet [PPBUH] said (some of the knowledge is like hidden, no one knows them except the scholars who have knowledge of Allah, if they revealed it to the deceived people, they would deny it).

I said that the illness of Safaha deprived them from the use of the knowledge, so how about wisdom, which is considered the essence of knowledge and its light. As light settles down only on a light. So whoever is got the wisdom is prohibited from giving it except to its people, or else it would be unfair and undermining for the wisdom. What a great poetry by sayydi Ali Zain al-Abdin ibn Mawlana al-Husain ibn Imam Ali ibn Abi-Talib [AHHF], when he said:

[there maybe an essence of knowledge which if I tell about

they would say to me: You are from those who worship the idols]

[and some Muslims will see that killing me is right

Seeing the worst thing they could do as a good thing]

[I hide of my knowledge its essences

so it would not get to an ignorant, then he would by tried]

In a conclusion we say that we have to face the enemies of the intermediary methodology with a mechanism that would have an absolute success. This can only be done with an absolutely perfect method and absolutely perfected and purified scholars. If you look for the method, you would find the Qur’an, and if you look for the people of absolute perfection, you would find the messengers, the prophets and their heirs, and if you look for the entirely purified people, you would find what Allah said in al-Ahzab, verse 33 [And Allah only wants to remove all abomination from you, ye Members of the Family (Ahl-al-Bait), and to make you perfectly pure]. That should be understood and assimilated through Fiqh not logic. It also should be done on basis of love, intimacy, and good manners by the preachers, in order to get the desired good results as it happened in the three early centuries.

We will continue speaking about the Prophet [PPBUH] and his family, the purified [AAT] later, ISA.
