'Narrated by the glorious scholars' (qasida 15:47)

This is the motto of this section, which is for preserving and the knowledge about the valuable books of our great religious predecessors.

You can find all special expressions in the Glossary. We need your comments to develop this site for you.

Great Ancestors' Books

Since we are constantly in need for the non-distorted books of our predecessors, and since some irresponsible groups had intentionally or unintentionally printed distorted books and spread them either in the markets or on the internet, there aroused an insisting need to find reliable sources for the books and knowledge of the virtuous predecessors. So, we are nominating to you some sister sites that choose accurately every book they present. This way you can easily find the books and texts of our predecessors which some people tried to hide and conceal, but Allah will complete His guidance, even if biased people dislike.

We will mention some of the books, from these sites, that sheikh Fakhr Eldin quoted from in his books and lessons. More information about these sites are in the library page in our main site.

A book from the library:

Al-Umm [the mother]

The book Al-Umm was written by Imam Abo-Abdullah Mohammad ibn Edris ibn al-Abbas ibn Osman ibn Shafie' ibn al-Sa'eb ibn Obayed ibn Abd-Yazeid ibn Hashim ibn Abd-Manaf ibn Qasi. His linage meets with that of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] in Abd-Manaf. He is known as ash-Shafie’y 150-204H. He was born in Gaza then moved to Mecca at the age of two. He gathered the Qur'an while he was young. He accompanied the scholars and sought Hadith, poetry, the days of people [history], and literature. He was taught by az-Zingi, ibn Oyaynah, ibn Grig, ibn Abi-Rabah, and Imam Malek. He said about himself: I memorized Qur'an at the age of seven  and  al-Mwataa at the age of ten. He moved around the countries of the caliphate and gathered the Fiqh and Hadith of Mecca, Medina and Iraq. He took knowledge from the companion of Imam Abi-Hanifa; Mohamed ibn al-Hassan. He classified books in Bagdad before he did his basic famous books in Egypt. He combined honor, right religion, generosity of soul, knowledge of the difference of the correct Hadith from the ill one, and the knowledge of the difference of the abrogating from the abrogated, with memorizing of Qur'an and the biography of the Prophet [PPBUH] and his followers. He also uncovered the disguise of his opponents, wrote books, had high class company of knowledge and literature. He wrote “Al-Umm” which is the main book of ash-Shafie’ya doctrine. In his book he discussed the other doctrines and while he did not agree with them, he was so polite. He did well with the organization, arrangement, epitomizing and proofs for the cases and sources. This book consisted of several books combined in one book. It contained books in the branches, the principals, the comparative Fiqh, the verses of the rules, and the Hadith of the rules together with their interpretation. His students arranged it. Al-Mazny summarized it. The book's levels in the knowledge are the Qur'an, the Sunna, the consent, the consented sayings of the companions, the difference of the companions, then the juristic reasoning (deduction).

The researcher was keen to ascribe the Hadith, the talk, and the poetry. He also explained the meaning of the words. He did not change anything in the book, to our knowledge.

The Knowledgeable Glorious Scholars

Thanks to Allah who has made the knowledgeable scholars successors to the prophets to inherit their manners and became role models for everyone. Many people got strayed and got away from the guidance of the Beloved [PPBUH] when they did not take the great old knowledgeable scholars of this nation as their source of knowledge, instead they became addicted to taking from the recent simple ones. This way they got away from what their righteous ancestors used to have and what was settled by the Islamic nation for decades and centuries.

The Prophet [PPBUH] said: (People are still in blessing as long as they took their knowledge from their knowledgeable elders. When they start taking from their young unknowledgeable ones then they are doomed). The Prophet [PPBUH] also said: (This religion is knowledge, so be careful who to get from). He [PPBUH] also said: (When the knowledgeable scholars die, people will choose their leaders from unknowledgeable ones. When they ask them, they will answer without knowledge, so they will lead astray and mislead everyone, and there is no strength no power but from Allah).

sayydi Fakhreddin Mohamed Osman [AAH] said:

[If you were asked: What is the book? It is       from what is narrated by the great scholars] (qasida 15:47)

All scholars agreed that no one can disparage any word from the Prophet [PPBUH] or judge it as being fabricated or weakly narrated, unless he has an absolute proof from Qur'an or Sunna of the Prophet [PPBUH]. From the start of the first century and up until now, great scholars [AAT] have taken the mission of preserving Turath of our true religion [inherited knowledge from the Prophet, His companions, and our great scholars]. They have been preserving it the same way as the Prophet [PPBUH] wanted them to do. That is how the authentic Hadith, true interpretations, and Historical events from the start of Mohammad' Message till our current day, were preserved and predicated honestly and truthfully. One of the main glorious scholars, with a great resume, is:

Imam ash-Shafie'y [AAH]

He is the third Imam of the four poles of the Islamic Shari'a (Abo-Hanifa, Malik, ash-Shafie’y, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal [AAT]. Religion became upright and running due to their right strive. So every Muslim should respect them and love them inside himself and out. Everyone should know that each of them took his knowledge from Shari'a and was correct in his proof and claim. If any one does not do so he will be of the objector sect, who refused religion and left it behind. As any one scorns one of the scholars he will be a disbeliever by consensus. On the other hand their love will bring their intercession in the hereafter, which is the day when a slave will deny his own brother.

He is Mohamed ibn Edris ibn al-Abbas ibn Osman ibn Shafie’, to whom ash-Shafie’ya is related, ibn al-Sa'eb ibn Obayed Allah ibn Zayed ibn Hashim ibn Abdel-Mottaleb ibn Abd-Manfaf who is the grandfather of the Prophet [PPBUH].

Imam ash-Shafie’y was born in Gaza 150H. He lived in Askalan. Hafez al-Bagdady said in the history of Bagdad: when the mother of ash-Shafie'y was pregnant with him, she saw as if Jupiter [it is one of the biggest plants] came out of her belly, then came down to Egypt, then a part of it fell down in each country. The dream interpreters explained it as: The mother will bear a scholar, his knowledge will be special for the Egyptians then it will cover all countries. Ash-Shafie’y moved to Mecca to get provided with knowledge, although he was born in a poor family. His father died when he was young, so he lived in a poor condition, yet this did not prevent him from seeking knowledge. He lacked money too much that he could not buy paper, so he wrote on pieces of leather and palm leaves.

Ismail ibn Yahia said that he heard ash-Shafie’y [AAH] saying “I memorized Qur'an at the age of seven and al-Mouwataa at the age of ten”. Then he began memorizing and writing Hadith. Then he left to the desert to learn the Arabic language and poetry. He stayed there for ten years. He learned to throw arrows, he used to hit the target ten times out of ten. Ar-Rabie said that he heard ash-Shafie'y saying that he was sticking to throwing until the doctor told him that he may catch tuberculosis due to staying in the hot weather for longtime. He also said that ash-Shafie'y used to say: I hit the target nine times out of ten. He said the ash-Shafie'y intended to miss the target the tenth time as a protection from the eye.

He was seeking knowledge of Shari'a so hard with a steadfast determination. While he was in Mecca, he was allowed to give Fatwa [Shari'a judgment] in spite of his young age. Al-Rabie ibn Soliman said: ash-Shafie’y was giving Fatwa at the age of fifteen, and he used to pray in the night till he died. That was not enough for him, so he moved to Medina to learn Fiqh from its Imam, Malik ibn Anas [AAH]. He borrowed the book of Imam Malik, al-Mowataa, and memorized it by heart. We notice that he could not buy books due to his poverty, yet this did not stop him from getting what he wanted, as he knew that if Allah loved a person, He will prepare for him who will teach him the matters of religion the correct way. When he came to  Malik’s scholastic circle, Malik asked him about his name. He replied Mohamed. Malik said "fear Allah, O, Mohamed, and keep away from sins, as you will have a great position. Allah bestowed upon you a light in your heart, so do not put it out with sins". Then ash-Shafie’y learn from Malik and received his knowledge till Malik died [AAT]. Then he moved to Bagdad. He debated Mohamed and Abo-Yusef and other great scholars, two of the great scholars of Hanifiya, and other great scholars, and Allah gave him the upper hand in these debates. When he overcame his opponents with the strong proofs, in front of ar-Rashid said “Our Prophet [PPBUH] was true when he said (learn from Quraish and never teach them), and (advance Quraish and never go before them). As-Sunna for ibn Asim. But then he settled in Egypt.

Ash-Shafie’y had a great excelled talent and a high position, his knowledge flourished as the Prophet [PPBUH] told in His Hadith (Do not insult Quraish, as the knowledge of its scholar will cover the whole earth). This meant that there will be a scholar who would be from Quraish and whose knowledge would cover the whole world. The scholars thought: who could be that scholar? They found that it has to be ash-Shafie’y, because the other three Imams: Malik, Abo-Hanifa, and Ahmed are not from Quraish.

Al-Mozni said that ash-Shafie’y [AAH] said "I saw sayydi Ali ibn Abi-Taleb in my sleep. He greeted me and shook my hands, he took off his ring and put it in my hand". My uncle interpreted it to me as “shaking the hand of Ali [AAH] means a secure from torture, putting his ring in your finger means that your name will be as famous as the fame of Ali [AAH] all over east and west".

Hafez al-Khatib al-Bagdady said that he heard ash-Shafie’y saying: I lived in the places of the Arabs for twenty years to learn their poetry and language. I memorized Qur'an by heart, I learnt the meaning of every letter except two letters. And he specified two letters.

Allah endowed ash-Shafie’y [AAH] a lot of talents one of them was a very touching nice voice, when he recited the Qur'an, though he was young, the listeners fell down to the ground because they became strongly afraid of Allah, and that was due to some secret in his voice. Bahr ibn Nasr said: "when we wanted to weep, we used to tell each others to go to ash-Shafie’y to recite the Qur'an for us. When he used to begin reciting, people used to fall down to the ground weeping and crying, so he would stop reciting".

About his worshipping [AAH], it was said that he used to divide the night into three parts: one third for seeking knowledge, the second one for worshipping, and the last one for sleeping. Al-Hussein ibn Ali [he meant al-Karabesi] told that he spent the night more than once with ash-Shafie’y, so he saw him praying for one third of the night, and he never recited more than fifty and sometimes one hundred verses of Qur'an. He used, when he passes a mercy verse, to ask Allah’s mercy for himself and for all the faithful, and when he passes a torture verse, to ask Allah to save and secure him and the other Muslims form its torture. He said: he has as if Allah has combined for him both hope and fear. Al-Rabie’ ibn Soliman said: Al Shafie’y used to complete reciting Qur'an once a day, but during the month of Ramadan he used to complete the recitation twice: once during the day and once during the night, i.e. he completed reciting the Qur'an sixty times during that month. This does not contradict with what al-Krabisi said because the faithful people do not perform their worshipping in front of other people, for fear of hypocrisy.

About the asceticism of Imam ash-Shafie’y, he [AAH] said "I did not feel full for sixteen years, because feeling full burdens the body, hardens the heart, removes talents, brings sleep and makes one feel weak for worshipping". And it was said about his piety that once he was asked about something, but he did not reply, then when he was asked about why he did not answer, he said I am not answering until I know which is better: being silent or answering?

He was so smart and intelligent that if he casted a look at the biggest binder of the knowledge books, he would memorize it by heart from just one look. He used to say "if the Hadith is correct, then it is my judgment in every case, if we saw a man with a heresy who walks on water, we will not accept him. He never swear by the name of Allah, neither as lying nor as honest, in order to glorify His Name. When he argued with someone, he used to hope that his opponent would be the one who is right, so as to learn from him. As for generosity; we say that Hatem’s generosity, is despised, in the face of his generosity. As for his wisdom and mild-temper and all his biography, it is all the same as the morals of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH]. He gave 40,000 dinars to the needy, despite his absolute poverty. Imam Malik gave him ten loads of money, but he spent them all for the sake of Allah. Once his stick fell down, so one of the street men picked it up and gave it back to him, but then the Imam gave him 500 dinars and attended him much.

The tailor wanted to make fun of him and sewed for him a garment with one sleeve wide and big while the other one is small and tight. Imam ash-Shafie'y said: "May Allah bless you, as this garment serves me very well. The small sleeve will spare me the rolling up when I use my hand to write, and I will use the wide sleeve to cover the paper that I do not read in order not to be mixed with the other paper - his memory was photographic, such that if he looked at a paper, it would be copied in his memory at once. Then he gave the tailor 10,000 dinars and thanked him.

The most important thing in the life of Imam ash-Shafie'y [AAH] is his doctrine in the belief with his commitment to Qur'an, Sunna and what the predecessors agreed upon, which is that Allah has neither body nor place. He considered those who embodied Allah and described Him with creature characteristics to be disbelievers, as those who related the sitting to Him, Almighty. From his sayings in the true belief, al-Zobaydi, in his book "the gifts of the pious masters", quoted from Imam ash-Shafie’y [AAH] "Allah exists where there was no place. Then He created the place. He is still eternal on the same condition as He was before creating the place. The change is not admissible in Himself or in his qualities". Hafez al-Seyouti narrated in his book "the likes and the matches" from Imam ash-Shafie’y that he said "Those who embody are disbelievers". Ibn al-Mo'alem al-Qurashi narrated that Imam ash-Shafie’y [AAH] said "those who think that Allah is sitting on the throne are disbelievers", as was told by judge Ayad.

Imam ash-Shafie’y [AAH] said "whoever sets to know his creator and reaches a being that he concluded through his own thinking, then he is simulating. And if he rests assured to complete inexistence then he is a disrupter. If he is assured that there is an existence but he admits his inability to understand Him then he is a monotheist".

He has masterpieces of prose, poetry, and wise benefits that fascinates the minds and uncovers the blindness of the heart. From his clear proverbs and his prose advices is what he said "the ornament of the scholars is the morals, the fear from Allah and the piety. The one who does not love knowledge is useless, no good, and you should not know or accept him". He also said "Whoever learns the Qur'an, then his cheap value will be great. And whoever looks in the Fiqh, then his position will become noble and his attention will increase. He also said "Whoever wants Allah to enlighten his heart, he has to use the Shari'a retreat, leave eating, and leave the company of the low foolish ones. He also said "No one knows hypocrisy except those who have sincere interior. If a man was to recommend the best man in mind he should look for ascetics. And the wise is the one who minds his mind away from every dispraised act and low quality. And the highest ranking among people is the one who does not see and forget any position for himself". He also said "satisfaction inherits comfort and fills the palm from the granter of the gifts. And a one has four corners: good morals, generosity, humbleness, and worshipping his Lord". He said also "Knowledge is what is memorized but it is what is useful for the hereafter. The most unjust one is he who wants the cordiality of someone who is useless to him in the worldly life and in the hereafter, and he who is being humble to some who is neither generous to him nor he has any known quality. You could not please all creatures, so you should do what makes you good with Allah". He also said "Whoever wants the worldly life, he should seek knowledge as it is the high raising. Also whoever wants the hereafter, he should seek knowledge and work with it for Allah. He also said "Whoever seeks knowledge with pride will gain nothing. But whoever seeks it with humiliation, submission, and hard living, will gain what he hopes for". Imam ash-Shafie'y had a badge connected to his neck written on it, with the Divine Power "Mohamed ibn Edris pledged to Allah that he would not see any abomination unless he changes and erases it". From "the qualities of ash-Shafie'y" by al-Gohary.

As for his delicate poems that were all wisdoms and proverbs that guides whoever is lost, he said:

[I passed the nobility while she was weeping

I asked her: why is the girl weeping]

[She said: how can I not cry when my people

died all especially from all other creatures]

He also said [AAH]:

[Oh human keep your tongue

from biting you, as it is a snake]

[A lot of the graved people who died of their tongues

while the braves once feared to meet them]

He also said [AAH]:

[If the fool speaks, do not respond to him

it is better to be silent than to respond to him]

[As if you speak to him, you would relive him

and if you leave him he would die of gloom]

He also said [AAH]:

[say to whoever criticized us with the vicissitudes of the time:

did you see time opposing anyone who is not dangerous?]

[Do not you see the sea while having the mould dead floating over

the pearls and jewels are settled deep down in the bottom]

[The sky has countless stars

yet the sun and the moon only are eclipsed]

He also said [AAH]:

[If the hands of the mean one were filled of richness

he would flood like a toilet with bad odor and stink]

[But the one with noble source is like a bough whenever

it is loaded with boons, it bends with humbleness]

He also said [AAH]:

[Let days do what they want

and be satisfied if the fate is enforced]

[Do not be alarmed by the accidents of the nights

because accidents of the worldly life are not maintained]

[be a man patient in face of the dilemmas

                                                        qualified with tolerance and loyalty]

[No sadness last, nor pleasure,

no misery, nor prosperity remains with you]

[Allah's fate is inevitable on us

                                                               including happiness and misery]

[Allah gives whom He wants without accounting

and deprives whom He wants of what He wants]

[Your provision is not decreased by slowness

it is not also increased by pains]

[If you have a content heart

then you and the owner of the world are equal]

[Cover yourself with generosity as every defect

                                                                    is covered with the generosity]

In the last third part of the night, in the time before daybreak, he once stood bowing his head of the fear and Glory of Allah, saying:

[I appeal to you with my humiliated standing before Your great Majesty

with a hidden secret which I do not know about]

[With bowing of my head and admitting my mistakes

with stretching my hand asking for the generosity and mercy]

[With your Divine Names that some of their description

would take all the prose and the poetry]

[With an old covenant, since "am I not your Lord?"

With he who was unknown became known through the names]

[Please let us taste the drink of closeness, O, You, Who if to give that drink

to a beloved one, he will never be depressed nor get thirty]

This is just a drop from his sea of poetry and narrated wisdoms. The article is not enough to contain it all. His virtues are countless as they are famous and obvious, so they need not be mentioned all.

Imam Ahmad was a student of Imam ash-Shafie’y.  Imam Ahmad used to be very pleased when Imam ash-Shafie’y visited him. Imam Ahmad said about him "before ash-Shafie'y I did not know the abrogated and the abrogating". Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal asked his father "How was ash-Shafie’y? as I heard you pray for him much". His father replied "Oh, my son, he was as the sun to the world and the health to the people. So look if we can have an alternative for those?" Abu Dawoud said that Imam Ahmad loved him more than he ever loved any one else. He also said that he did not know of anything more supportive to Islam than ash-Shafie’y and his piety. Ahmad ibn Yassar said: without ash-Shafie'y, Islam would have been lost totally. Ibn Mogahid told us to take Fiqh from ash-Shafie’y and stick to him.

Al-Mozni said: I saw the  Prophet [PPBUH] in my dream and asked him about ash-Shafie’y [AAH], so he said to me (Whoever wants my love and Sunna, he should follow Mohamed ibn Idris ash-Shafie’y, as he is from me and I am from him).

One of his miraculous acts is that when ar-Rashid, the caliph, wanted to hurt him because of a knowledge matter. Then Imam ash-Shafie’y saw in a dream a caller calling him as he was standing in front of Allah, and said to him "O, Mohamed, be steadfast on the religion of Mohammad, do not deviate from it lest you would be astray or mislead others. Be firm, O, Imam of the people, no fear upon you from him, and say [We have put yokes round their necks right up to their chins, so that they are made raised heads and lowered eyes] Yassin 36:8. He woke up reciting this verse as a teaching of the Divine Power. Al Rasheed asked him to come and said to him "we were blamed for what we intended to do you. So you go as righteous. You are the noticed and the protected from all harm" and gave him 10,000 dinars. Ash-Shafie'y distributed it in front of him, and he was protected from him.

He used to be sick until he suffered, during his last days, from hemorrhoids. So he used to have the knowledge with a pot under him, thanking Allah for His trial, until he died at the Esha' prayer on Friday night and was buried on its day. That was on the last day of Ragab 204H while he was 54 years old. He was buried in Quraish's graves in Moqattam mountain. Al-mozni visited him during his sickness and said to him "how are you today?" He replied "I am leaving the worldly life and the friends. I am to face my bad deeds. I am to drink from the death drink. I am to go to my Lord. I do not know whether my soul goes to paradise to congratulate it, or to hell to console it".

Ar-Rabie ibn Soliman said: I saw ash-Shafie’y after his death in a dream. So I asked him: O, Abo-Abdullah, what Allah did with you? He replied: He made me sit on a golden chair and showered me with wet pearls.

The minister, Nezam Almalek, (408-485), who ruled for 30 years, wanted to move his corpse, long after his death, to be buried in al-Nezamiya school in Bagdad which was founded by the minister and where Allah made the knowledge appeared and spread. When they opened the grave, a perfume scent came out of it and made all of the attendance drunk until they fell unconscious. So they rebuilt the grave as it was before, repent to Allah and left him in his paradise gardens.
