For an Honest Seeker (cont.)

Said our ancestors: "Learn how to be silent as you learn how to speak. If speaking may guide you, then silence can save you. There are two benefits for silence:

The first one is that you may avoid the ignorance of whoever is more ignorant than you. The second one is that you can learn from whoever is more knowledgeable than you".

Scholars also said: "Learn how to say [I don’t know], and don’t learn saying [I know]. As, if you said [I don’t know], they will teach you until you know. But, if you said [I know] they will ask you until you don’t know".

Scholars also said: "If a scholar is wrong when he said [I know], he is hit in the killing"

Jesus [PBUH] said: "All the good is in three things:  silence, talking, and looking. If one’s silence is not thoughtful then he is inattentive. And if one’s talking is not Dhikr [reciting Allah's name] then he is talking nonsense. And if one’s seeing is not learning then he is amusing".

Some righteous said: "There will come a time, when the best thing people can do is sleeping, and their best knowledge is silence, because of the corruption of their actions and the suspicion in their knowledge. And, their best condition will be hunger because of the spread of forbidden food and the vagueness of the Halal one".

Some scholars also said: "Silence is the sleeping of the mind, and talking is its wakefulness. Every wakefulness needs some sleep, so when a sane is silent, his mind is put together and his intellect will be present". In the commandment of ibn Abbas: "It is safer not to talk when it is not your business, otherwise you may be mistaken. Do not talk when it is not your business until you find a spot near someone who talks in his business, but he misplaced his words and fell in hardship".

Some scholars said: "A man’s piety is shown in the way he speaks" in some traces: "The more you talk, the more mistakes you make. When you make many mistakes your heart dies". It is said that: "If you talk less, you will be more right".

It is also said: "One will be asked to report for every joke, fool words, or nonsense, he said. He will be scolded and reproached with five questions:

1. Why did you say this word? Was it relevent to you?

2. Was it beneficial to you when you said it?

3. Would it hurt you if you did not say it?

4. What if you just remained silent to avoid what comes after?

5. Wouldn’t you just say "Subhan Allah"  and "al-Hamdolellah"  to get rewarded instead?

They also say that for every word, three books are opened: "Why, how, and for whom". So you either survive them or will have a long settlement day.

Al-Hassan said: "The believer’s tongue is behind his heart. If he wants to talk, he thinks first. So if talking is for him, he would talk, and if it is against him he would not. The hypocrite’s heart is on the tip of his tongue, so he talks of anything that comes to his heart, he would not stops or wait". In a trace, they say: "A defect for the scholar is when likes talking better than silence". Also: "In talking there is retouch and excess, while in silence there is safety and gain".

In a preaching by the Prophet [PPBUH]: "blessed is whoever worries about his own defects rather others’ defects, gives his extra money to the needy, and stops his extra speech". Traces about silence and those meanings are so much to be mentioned here.

The Sufi Khalwa [solitude] rids the heart from the materialistic world, shifts all the internal thoughts towards the creator, and strengthens the intention for persistence. on the other hand, mingling with people inherits weak will and intention, also distract the thoughts. Khalwa also lessen the thoughts about the immediate body pleasures because of the loss of seeing them, as the eye is the door to the heart, through which its defects, pleasures, and lust are entered". Some scholars said: "Who looks much, regrets much". The Khalwa brings thoughts and renews the interest of the afterlife, because it gives you certainty, makes you forget about the people, and makes you keep remembering Allah. The Khalwa itself is one of the biggest wellness. A Hadith was narrated: (Ask Allah for wellness, since the best thing Allah's slave gets second to certainty is the wellness). It was also said in a trace: isolation from people is wellness. So this is some meaning of the Hadith about what to ask Allah for, and what is best second to certainty.

The seeker cannot be honest unless he finds joy and pleasure in Khalwa that he does not find among people, finds energy and strength in secrecy that he does not find publicly. He would also find his joy in loneliness, his soul in Khalwa, and his best deeds in secrecy.

Khalwa, as a condition, against the mingling with people, is like fear, as a rank, against Love. As fear is for all worshipers and Love is more for its special people, so is Khalwa for all seekers and intimacy with people is more for its special people of Imams and scholars. But, Khalwa needs another mind, while loneliness and isolation need another faith ...
