Once upon a time

 Landing to Earth

Allah says: [Then Adam received from his Lord Words And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful] (al-Baqarah 2:37)

When our father Adam came to Earth, he spent 41 days praying and pleading that Allah would forgive him. The words that Adam received from Allah, in some interpretations, are those of this verse of Qur'an [They said: Our Lord! We have been unjust to ourselves, and if You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers] (al-A’araf 23)

And in Al-Razy’s explanation: It was told by Ibn-Abbas that Adam (PBUH) said:

"O Lord, didn’t You create me with your hands without any means?", "Yes". Allah replied.

He said: "O Lord, didn’t You blow in me from your soul?". "Yes", Allah replied.

He said: "O Lord, didn’t You let me reside in your paradise?". "Yes", Allah replied.

He said: "O Lord, does not Your mercy precede Your anger?". "Yes", Allah replied.

He said: "O Lord, if I repented, would you forgive me and bring me back to paradise?". "Yes", Allah replied. So that is where the Qur’an says [Then Adam received words from his Lord], In a narration by al-Sadeyy, He said: "O Lord, Did You have written on me to commit sin?". "Yes", Allah replied.

Al-Nakh'ay said: I once came to Ibn al-Abbas and I said: What are the words that Adam has received from Allah? and he told me that: "Allah taught Adam and Hawaa [Eve] about Al-Hajj, and they went for Hajj, and those words were what we say during Al-Hajj. And when they were done with their Hajj, Allah revealed to them that He accepted their repentance"

In reference to the Qur'an verse: [Our Lord! We have been unjust to ourselves, and if You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers] (al-A’araf 23), Sa'id ibn-Gobier said that Ibn Abbas [AAT] said that it was: "There is no God but You, glory and praise be unto You. I did bad and was unjust to myself. Forgive me as You are the best forgiver. There is no God but You, glory and praise be unto You. I did bad and was unjust to myself. Have mercy on me, as You are the best of the mercifuls. There is no God but You, glory and praise be unto You. I did bad and was unjust to myself. Accept my repentance, as You are the all-Forgiving, the all-Merciful".

Aisha [AAH] said: "When Allah wanted to forgive Adam, Adam circumambulated al-Bait [the House of Allah] seven times. At that time al-Bait was only a red hill. When he prayed two Raka'a, he aimed at al-Bait and said: O, Allah, You know my secret and my overtness, so accept my excuse and apology. You know my need, so give me what I am asking for. You know what is in my inner self, so forgive my sins. O’Allah, I ask you for a believing heart and a true certainty, so I will know that nothing will happen to me but what you wrote for me. And make me satisfied with what you gave me. Then Allah revealed to Adam: [Adam, your sins are forgiven, and if anyone of your descendants prayed this same prayer of yours, I will forgive his sins, relieve his worries and sorrow, remove the poverty from in-between his eyes, and the Donya (worldly life) will come to him without wanting it".

And it was also said that Adam said:

"O, Allah. I ask you and plead for you, by your beloved Mohammad [PPBUH], so as to forgive me". So Allah revealed to him: [But how did you know about Mohammad and I have not created him yet?]. Adam said: "When you first created me, I raised my head and saw written on the throne (No God but Allah and Mohammad is the messenger of Allah). And when you brought me to paradise I saw written on the door of paradise (No God but Allah and Mohammad is the messenger of Allah). Therefore, I knew that you would not connect Your name except to the most beloved one to you". Allah said: "O, Adam, you said the truth. And I would not have created you if it was not for him".

Some knowledgeable people said that the words that Adam said were: "I ask forgiveness from Allah Almighty as He is the One Who accepts repentance, most merciful" Hence, Allah said in Qur'an: [And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful] (al-Baqara 2:37)

Other knowledgeable people said that: "Everything forbidden by Allah is the tree of Adam. And whoever enter the paradise of knowledge then was overcome by fate and ate from that tree, which is the tree of bad manners, will be dropped out of this paradise. But if he is cared for by Allah, he will be taught the repentance. Then, he will be forgiven, guided and put down to the land of Allah's slavery. That was the case with Adam [PBUH]. He was landed on Earth to become Allah’s caliph [representative of Allah] on His land. So what a good sin, that of Adam, which inherited him the caliphate and the closeness to Allah. And in this context it was said that: "A sin, that leads to humiliation and Lacking to Allah, is better than an obedience that leads to pride and arrogance”.

Here comes the question about Adam’s story with Allah. Didn’t Allah teach him all the names?! Didn’t the angels prostrate to him out of veneration and admiration?! Didn’t Allah make him stay in paradise and let him get married, and dressed him up with the best of the best ... and so many other countless gifts?! Yet, Adam disobeyed Allah and ate from the tree. Couldn't he remember when Satan whispered to him [Your Lord did not prevent you from this tree...]? I tried to think about with no solution, until I read this line from the qasida of one knowledgeable:

[O, Lord. If Adam was a sinner or was lost

You would not have made him Your caliph] (qasida 61:21)

Then I found the main two books of Hadith that prophet Mohammad [PPBUH] said: (Adam and Moses argued. Moses said: O, Adam. You are the father of all humans. Allah have created you with his hands, blew into you from his soul, and made his angels prostrate to you. Then you got us all out of paradise including yourself? Adam told him: You are Moses who was favored with Allah’s speech and Allah wrote you the Torah with his hands. From what you found written in the Torah, How many years before I was created did Allah wrote my fate [and Adam disobeyed his Lord, so he was misguided] (Taha 20:121)? Moses replied: 40 years. Adam said: So why are you blaming me for something that Allah have destined for me forty years before I was created?  And Adam won over Moses with his reasoning).

In the interpretation of Ibn-Ajiba said narrating the Prophet [PPBUH]: (If all humans’ minds are compared to Adam’s mind, his mind would be better). narrated also be Ibn Garir and Sayouti. They interpreted the Qur'an verse: [We found no decisiveness form his part] (Taha 20:115), that he was not decisive to do sin. He made a mistake or did not understand well. In all cases he did not do it on purpose. When the Qur'an said: [and Adam disobeyed his Lord, so he was misguided] (Taha 20:121), that was because of his high rank and closeness to Allah, so his action was considered disobeying. Our Prophet [PPBUH] said that (The good deeds of the righteous people are considered bad for the people who are close to Allah) which means that people who are close from Allah are judged differently and more strictly for their actions.

In the interpretation of Mohamed Al-Shanqeety about the Qur'an verse: [So he forgot, and We found no decisiveness form his part] (Taha 20:115), that it proves that our father Adam [PBUH] was not one of the messengers to whom Allah said [Therefore be patient (O Muhammad) as did the Messengers of strong will (decisiveness)] (al-Ahqaf 46:35). And those messengers are: Nouh, Ibrahim, Moses, Jesus, and Prophet Mohammad [PPBUH].

And the word [misguided] means that Adam disobeyed Allah and so he missed the right path because of the disobedience. This disobedience was explained more than once in Qur'an as: Allah permitted Adam and his wife to eat anything they like from paradise, but He prohibited them from getting close to just one certain tree. Satan kept whispering to them and swearing to Allah that he is a sincere adviser to them, and that if they eat from that tree they would gain eternal life and reign. So, Satan tricked to eat from that tree as the Allah said [And he [Shaitân (Satan)] swore by Allâh to them both (saying): Verily, I am one of the sincere wellwishers for you both. So he misled them with deception] (al-A’raf 7:21-22), so they ate from that tree. Some of the scholars used to tell that Umar said: "Who uses Allah as a mean (swearing) to trick us he will succeed in that"

Abou-Horayrah told a Hadith that the Prophet said: (The believer is naive and generous, but the immoral is mean and sly). In this context Naftaway said:

[you may deceive the generous person     but the sly one is too sophisticated to be deceived]

So Adam [PBUH] made a mistake only because Satan deceived him. As some of the scholars said that: As much as Adam loves and glorifies Allah, he thought that no one can swear to Him unless he is honest. So, when Satan swore to Allah, Adam forgot about the agreement that he should not eat from the tree.

Some scholars also said, about [he was misguided], that it meant the spoil of his life with the descent to earth.

After Adam’s repentance, Allah ordered him to go to Arafat Mountain. After he left India to go to Makah with the help of an angel that Allah sent to give him directions to Makah. And when Adam came to Makah, Allah revealed to him to circumambulate al-Bait [Allah's House, al-Ka'aba], where its place was specified to Adam. He then came out to Arafat and stood there. Then Eve came there and they met for the first time after landing to earth. This mountain was called Arafat because Adam and Eve got acquainted over it. The word Arafat in Arabic is from acquaintance.
