Al-Hajj (cont.)
2
[You
people, Al-Hajj to al-Kaaba is for
the night traveller
and whoever
has a dead heart will not
like my melodies](qasida
33:1)
A new seeker may ask why we connect
Mawlana’s words to the following quranic verse; [Have
they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to
understand and ears wherewith to hear? For
indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts,
which are within the bosoms, that grow blind]
(al-Hajj
22:46).
The explanation is simple. In the previous quranic verse,
there is the mentioning of travelling
as well as hearts,
same as that qasida line. Mawlana asked us
to relate his words to Qur'an by saying:
[To
Quran refer all my words
for in Qur'an,
necks are saved]
(qasida 74:13)
This is line number 13 in Qasida 74 in
Sharab al-Wasl. If we count the
number of words from the beginning of Qasida to [necks
are saved], they will be 114, the same as the number
of chapters in Quran. Note that Mawlana’s words above are talking
about Quran. This is expected from Mawlana whose speech is full of
wonders; [No doubt, these are my
wonders]. The point is that
this speech is not poetry, but a
manifestation of a divine knowledge revealed from Allah to pure
hearts and souls.
In fact, there is nothing
better than Allah’s book to which we relate the words of saints in
order to maximize our benefit from it. A seeker,
whose heart is pure, is given
Madad (support) by Allah;
[To all We render aid
- both to these and those]
(al-Esra'
17:20)
and [This is Our gift
- so give freely or withheld - without reckoning]
(Sad
38:39).
Madad (support)
is not limited to materials. The greatest Madad
is the revelation of the endless meanings of Allah’s words to the
hearts of good seekers who are following their Sheikhs;
[O ye who believe! fear Allah and be
with the truthful]
(al-Tawbah
9:119)
Mawlana says to us that we
do al-Hajj obligation in order for our
sins to be forgiven.
However, the main obstacle is getting back to the worldly life with
all its temptations that make us fall in sins again. Therefore,
Mawlana is telling us about another type of Hajj
which we can do either before or after the obligatory
Hajj. It is the Hajj
of those hearts enlightened by Allah’s remembrance
[Dhikr]. It is impossible to have such hearts without a
shiekh who knows hearts’ diseases and how to heal them by means of
Awrad (daily prayers), Shari'a
and Sunna; [And whatsoever the
Messenger gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain
from that]
(al-Hashr
59:7).
In his interpretation of the first verse in surat
al-Isra' (prophet‘s night journey),
Ibn Ajeeba says that Allah uses [with
his servant], not
[with his prophet/messenger]
to indicate that whoever completes his service to Allah will take a
part in this Isra'.
There are two types of Isra':
one with body which is only for Prophet
Mohammad [PPBUH]
and one with soul which is for all saints. The purity of soul
determines how far it elevates to what is behind the Throne and how
deep it gets into the sea of power and into the lights of the
angelic world. The seeker
circumambulates with his body around al-Kaaba,
and when he elevates, he circumambulates with his soul in the world
of power and in the angelic world, and acquires the true meanings
that cultivate his soul. When the soul is enlightened by the lights
of true meanings, the heart also gets enlightened, the fact that
makes it humble and makes all organs obedient. This corresponds with
the Hadith; (If
hearts humbles, organs will be obedient).
narrated by Imam Al-Syoty in Jama Al-kalem.
Thus, the heart will live in a continuous remembrance
[Dhikr] day and night. It will taste the meanings of saints’
words about Qur'an and Sunna. Therefore,
Mawlana is saying to us [You people, this
is the true Hajj, the hajj of the living hearts].
Those living hearts are only for a seeker following a sheikh. Those
who are away from Allah won’t like nor understand Mawlana’s words.
They will not be fond of his qasaid which help seekers to go to
Allah with their hearts and souls. When the seeker goes to Allah, he
will live all his life in a state of true hajj. When he dies, he
goes to Allah without sins. Unlike the obligatory hajj,
he will not get back to the worldly life
to be deceived by its temptations.
To be continued with what Mawlana says:
[The
pillars of religion is completed by Al-Hajj
to the House
of Allah in the Holy country]
(qasida
39:1)
