Great Ancestors' Books

Since we are constantly in need for the non-distorted books of our predecessors, and since some irresponsible groups had intentionally or unintentionally printed distorted books and spread them either in the markets or on the internet, there aroused an insisting need to find reliable sources for the books and knowledge of the virtuous predecessors. So, we are nominating to you some sister sites that choose accurately every book they present. This way you can easily find the books and texts of our predecessors which some people tried to hide and conceal, but Allah will complete His guidance, even if biased people dislike.

We will mention some of the books, from these sites, that sheikh Fakhr Eldin quoted from in his books and lessons. More information about these sites are in the library page in our main site.

The Knowledgeable Glorious Scholars

Thanks to Allah who has made the knowledgeable scholars successors to the prophets to inherit their manners and became role models for everyone. Many people got strayed and got away from the guidance of the Beloved [PPBUH] when they did not take the great old knowledgeable scholars of this nation as their source of knowledge, instead they became addicted to taking from the recent simple ones. This way they got away from what their righteous ancestors used to have and what was settled by the Islamic nation for decades and centuries.

The Prophet [PPBUH] said: (People are still in blessing as long as they took their knowledge from their knowledgeable elders. When they start taking from their young unknowledgeable ones then they are doomed). The Prophet [PPBUH] also said: (This religion is knowledge, so be careful who to get from). He [PPBUH] also said: (When the knowledgeable scholars die, people will choose their leaders from unknowledgeable ones. When they ask them, they will answer without knowledge, so they will lead astray and mislead everyone, and there is no strength no power but from Allah).

sayydi Fakhreddin Mohamed Osman [AAH] said:

[If you were asked: What is the book? It is       from what is narrated by the great scholars] (qasida 15:47)

All scholars agreed that no one can disparage any word from the Prophet [PPBUH] or judge it as being fabricated or weakly narrated, unless he has an absolute proof from Qur'an or Sunna of the Prophet [PPBUH]. From the start of the first century and up until now, great scholars [AAT] have taken the mission of preserving Turath of our true religion [inherited knowledge from the Prophet, His companions, and our great scholars]. They have been preserving it the same way as the Prophet [PPBUH] wanted them to do. That is how the authentic Hadith, true interpretations, and Historical events from the start of Mohammad' Message till our current day, were preserved and predicated honestly and truthfully. One of the main glorious scholars, with a great resume, is:

Imam al-Hasan al-Basry

His birth and growing up:

Al-Hasn al-Basry was born in Medina in 21H, when there was only two years left of the caliphate of ssyydi Omar ibn al-Khattab [AAH]. His father is Yassar the servant of Zaid ibn Thabit the companion of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] and the writer of the revelation. His father was one of the slaves of war who were captured from the Persians by Khalid in the time of caliphate of Abo-Bakr, then his father was set free. His mother is Khaira the servant of Om-Salama, the Mother of believers [AAH], in whose house he grew up. When his mother used to go away for some affairs and he would cry, then Om-Salama used to give him her breast, and Allah gave him His mercy, as the breast of Om-Salama was wetted with a lot of milk and the little baby quenched his thirst. So Om-Salama is considered to be his mother from breastfeeding. They used to say that his eloquence was due to the blessing of that. So he grew up to be one of the masters and the most famous of the followers. He met many of the companions and heard from them.

His growth:

Al-Hasan al-Basry grew up in Medina and memorized Qur'an in the time of sayydi Osman ibn Affan. Sayyda Om-Salama used to get out to the companions while he was young so that they would pray for him. One of those who prayed for him was sayydi Omar ibn al-Khattab [AAH], when he said "O Allah, Let him be good with Fiqh and loved by people". So Al Basry became very knowledgeable in Fiqh after that. He constantly stayed with Imam Abo-Huraira and Imam Anas ibn Malik [AAT] and so he memorized from them the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH]. He the more he got of Hadith the more he grew Allah fearing and believing, until he became one of the ascetic followers and one of their Imams and preachers. He was a reference to be asked in the problems and the cases. Once sayydi Anas ibn Malik [AAH] was asked a question, then he said "Ask our beloved servant al-Hasan al-Basry, as he heard as we did, but he memorized and we forgot". Anas ibn Malik [AAH] used to say "I envy the people of Basra for two men: al-Hasan al-Basry and Mohamed ibn Sireen".

When he grew up he was constantly stuck to Jihad, Knowledge, and work. He drank from the knowledge springs of the companions who were the keepers of the inheritance of the Prophet Mohammad [PPBUH] of knowledge and information. He was one of those how collected the Qur'an in the time of the caliph Osman ibn Affan [AAH].

Al-Hasan al-Basry narrated from Imam Ali ibn Abi-Talib [AAH] as he was 14 years old when sayydi Ali left Medina to Koufa. That was before the killing of sayydi Osman [AAH]. He was asked "O abo-Saied, you sometimes say: the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said, while you have not met him?" He replied "Everything you heard me say that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] said it, I heard it from Ali ibn Abo-Talib [AAH]. Except I am in a time when I can not mention Ali". He mean for fear from al-Hajjaj. Many Hafiz's narrated from him like: at-Turmuzy, an-Nisa'i, al-Hakim, Addarqatny, and Abo-Na'im, and they said about his narrations that it was between Sahih and Good. That would answer those who denied that he heard from Ali [AAH], because what is proved is before what is not, so it is take on the fact that he did not hear from Ali [AAH] after he left Medina.

There is an interpretation that is attributed to al-Hasan al-Basry as well as there are interpretations attributed to Ibn Abbas, Ibn Mas'oud, Mojahid, Qatada and others. However these interpretations are collections of their sayings from the books of Hadith and other scholars' interpretations. The interpretation of Imam al-Hasan al-Basry was collected by dr. Mohamed Abdel-Rehim in two binders.

He was widely knowledgeable with plenty of material in interpretation, Hadith, language, and others. Ar-Rabie' ibn anas said "I used to visit al-Hasan for ten years, and I have never visited him a single day unless I heard something that I have not heard before". He was eloquent, intelligent, and sweet logical talker. Abo-Omar ibn al-Alaa' said: I have never seen anyone more eloquent than al-Hasan and al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, and al-Hasan is better. Thabit ibn Qurra described him as:

"He was one of the pearl stars in knowledge, piety, asceticism, chastity, warm-heartedness, Fiqh, and knowledge. His sitting would gather many sorts of people: someone who wanted to hear some Hadith, someone who wanted to get some interpretation, and someone who wanted to get some preaching. In all that you would find him like the copious sea in flowing, and like the lighting lamp in glory. He [AAH] had great effect over the hearts of his listeners. the secret about that is that he had honesty, certainty, strong passion, flaming soul, deep sincerity, and great wish to guide people to Allah. He combined between the eloquent tongue and the strong faith. He believed in what he said and he interacted with it, so his words came out of his heart to the hearts of his listeners. When he talked about the companions or the judgment day, or when he preached or did Dhikr, he would excite the anxiety, cause the eyes to run, and affects the hearts".

Al-Ghazaly said in his book "al-Ehya": Al-Hasan al-Basry had the closest speech to the prophets [PBUT], and the closest guidance to the companions [AAT].

Qatada said: I never sat with any man of Fiqh unless I saw the superiority of al-Hasan al-Basry over him. He was dignified and revered by all scholars rather than the public. He grew up with the springs of wisdom flowing through his tongue with a beauty in style, eloquence of the tongue, and gravity of expression.

He [AAH] had a strong attractive personality and lovable to the souls, because of what he had of high talents and great virtues, until Thabit ibn Morra said "Verily al-Hasan is one of the Muslim nation that it brags with them over other nations".

Some said that al-Hasan was the most handsome of the people of Basra. Ibn Kathir said: "al-Hasan al-Basry was tall and had a big figure. He also was one of the bravest men of his time and his forearm's width was as a span of the hand. When he used to come, one would think that he just came from the burial of an intimate one, and when he sitsm one would think that he is a captured prisoner who has been set to be killed, and when the hell was to be mentioned, it was as if it was not created except for him".

His fear from Allah and sadness:

Al-Hasan was a great Allah, Almighty, fearing one. He was constantly watching for Allah and always having the hereafter in front of his eyes. Al-Yazid ibn Hawshab said "I never saw anyone who fears Allah more than al-Hasan and Omar ibn Abdel-Aziz, it was as if Hell was not created except for them". Ibrahim ibn Eisa al-Yashkary said "I never saw anyone who was longer in sadness than al-Hasan. I never saw him except when I thought that he has just had a calamity".

The society in his time:

Al-Hasan existed in a time when the Islamic society was in one of its most important periods. During that society was adhering to Islam in everything, then al-Hasan saw it when it was slipping away from many of its rules and morals, and diverting from many of its Sunan and guidance.

He lived in that time when the Lights of the Prophecy were still extended in the times of the rightly guided companions. Then he saw that fading away little by little from the clear springs of the prophecy, so he could diagnose the sickness and describe the cure due to his high intelligence, lighting mind, deep faith, and great sincerity.

He has seen the Islamic society walking towards the torrential materialism, getting destroyed by the desires, and resurrecting the pre-Islamic traditions that was mortified by Islam. So he stood there between people and their falling in the heedlessness and sinking into the worldly life. He was reminding them of Allah and the hereafter. He was giving them preaching that made their hard hearts soften and their solid eyes run with tears. He always reminded them of the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] and his faithful pure companions who believed him and carried this religion with faith and devotion, without being spoiled with the gifts, without being attracted to the luxury, without being seduced by the ornament of the worldly life, and without being tempted by the wishes, rather they abandoned the worldly life with its desires and ornament. He always reminded them of what the Prophet [PPBUH] was afraid for his nation, from competition over the worldly life, when he said (It is not poverty I fear for you, but I fear that the worldly life would facilitate for you. Then you would compete over it like those before you, and then it would destroy you as it did for them).

What he [AAH] said describing the morals of the believer:

From the morals of the believer: a strength in religion, faith with certainty, knowledge with tolerance, tolerance in knowledge, courtesy and fairness with righteousness. He would neither wrong the ones he hate, nor commit sins helping the ones he love. He would not talk ill to anyone nor call him names. He would not talk nonsense, toy, or play. He would not backbite anyone. He would not follow what he should not. He would not deny someone his right. He would not exceed the proper bounds of excuse. He would not be pleased for anyone else's tragedy or sin.

What he [AAH] said describing the just Imam:

Imam Omar ibn Abdel-Aziz, when he was appointed for the caliphate, asked al-Hasan al-Basry to write for him the characteristics of the just Imam, so he wrote to him a letter including what the just Imam's merits should be. It contained:

O, Prince of Believers, a just Imam should be like the kind shepherd to his camels, he would take it to the best pastureland, keep it from the places of danger, protect it from the beasts, and shadow it from the harm of the hotness and coldness.

O, Prince of Believers, a just Imam should be like the sympathetic father to his children, he would provide for them while they are young, teach them while they are growing, earn for them while he is alive, and store for them for what is after his death.

O, Prince of Believers, a just Imam should be the guardian for the orphans and the keeper for the poor, raising their young and supplying their old.

O, Prince of Believers, a just Imam should be like the heart among the organs, they would be as good as he is and as bad as he is.

O, Prince of Believers, a just Imam is the one standing between Allah and his servants, he would listen to Allah's words and make them listen, he looks at Allah and make them look, and he obeys Allah and leads them.

So do not be, O, Prince of Believers, among those whom Allah made you rule, like a servant who was entrusted by his Master who gave him His money and children, yet he wasted the money and rendered the children astray, so he made the people poor and scattered the money.

His courage [AAH]:

He was [AAH] brave when it comes to truth. For Allah, he did not fear the blame of anyone. He used to abide by the truth no matter what, without complying or periphrasis, which are the characteristics of a faithful scholar who inherited the prophets.

One of the stories that talks about his bravery is the story of his standing in the face of the rulers of his time for the truth, which raised his rank among the scholars of his time. Ibn Khakan said:

When Omar ibn Hobayrah was appointed as the ruler of Iraq and Kharasan, that was in the caliphate time of Yazid ibn Abdel-Malik, he summoned al-Hasan al-Basry, Mohamed ibn Sireen and ash-Sho'aby. That was in the year 103H. He said to them "Yazid is the caliph of Allah, Allah made Yazid ruler of His servants, and He took their oath to obey Yazid, and took our covenant to listen to him and obey. Yazid has made as you see, so when he writes to me an order, I will take it with all the necessary power. So what do you see?" ibn Sireen and ash-Sho'aby said something that is covered with avoidance to confrontation. Ibn Hobayrah said "What do you see, O, Hasan?" Al-Hasan said "O, Ibn Hobayrah, you should fear Allah in Yazid, and do not fear Yazid in Allah, as Allah will protect you from Yazid, but Yazid would not protect you from Allah. And verily, Allah is about to send you an angel who would take you away from your thrown, and take you out of your wide palace to your narrow grave. Then nothing will save you except your deeds. O, ibn Hobayrah, if you disobey Allah, then know that Allah only made this sultan to support His religion and servants, so do not ride the religion of Allah and His servant to go to His sultan. As no obedience to a creature through a disobedience of the Creator".

Once one man asked al-Hasan, while there were some people from Sham [Syria] present, and said "What do you say about the sedition?" Al-Hasan said "Do not be with these or those?" One of Sham people said "Not event with the prince of believers, O Abo-Sa'ied?" Al-Hasan got angryand said "Not event with the prince of believers, O Abo-Sa'ied... Yes, not even with the prince of believers".

This is al-Hasn al-Basry, the scholar, ascetic, pious, pure, Allah fearing, Mojahid, preacher, and sincere. He was brave about the truth, a war over the subjectivity and desires, a warner for the self-indulgent people, and a sword over the heads of the tyrants and the diverting one from the religion of Allah. He was an example for the working scholars who inherited the prophets. He was not from the rulers or sultans, rather from the men of knowledge and faith who supported life and sultans to keep the nation's belief, faith, and principles. That is why people loved him, glorified him, and acknowledged his favor. So the day of his death, in the beginning of Ragab of 110H, was one of the sad crying days of the Islamic history. All people attended his funeral, which was after the Gom'a prayer, until no one was left in the big Masjid to do Asr prayer. One of those who attended his funeral said "I never heard of any day that Asr prayer was abandoned, in that big Masjid of Basra, except on that day".

May Allah give him His Great Mercy, and reward him as the best of His reforming guiding preachers. Many of the Sufi knowledgeable masters said that al-Hasan al-Basry is considered as one of the Imams of Sufism and one of the Sufi-order to Allah people. Ibn Arabi said "al-Hasan al-Basry is one of the Imams of the Sufi people, the people of the way to Allah, and the people of the signs and secrets".
